[Poll] Best campaign of 2013

Post by lipk »

A year has come to an end; in these days the whole Internet is about lists and votes of best and worst things of 2013. So why not make our own here on the Wesnoth forums? I took the 10 most downloaded campaigns from the 1.10 add-ons server that were updated at least once during the last year. Vote for your favorite one! The poll is open for one week.

I want to vote for Invasion from the Unknown, but it isn't there, so, no vote from me. It is surely the most downloaded on 1.8, that is still active a little bit. This let me to some more thoughts:

Maybe it would make more sense to use campaigns that were actually released for the first time in 2013, and in late 2012, in this poll. There were plenty of new campaigns in this period - The Library of Kratemaqht, For Power, The Rising, Shadows of Deception, The Legend Begins and my 3 campaigns, for example.

EDIT: Forgot to say, I voted for After the Storm, though my vote may not have been totally fair, since I've played only 4 of the campaigns listed above.

I think Bad Moon Rising sneaked on there by a technicality, I'm pretty sure the only update I did in 2013 to the BfW 1.10.x server was to alter an image that was too, um, "awesome" for the iphone to handle. I wouldn't call it a 2013 campaign.(As far as 1.10.x server at least. And no, I did not vote.)

Not that I'm blaming lipk, BfW 1.10 has been around for a long time. It's about time for BfW 1.12.
BfW 1.12 supported, but active development only for BfW 1.13/1.14: Bad Moon Rising | Trinity | Archaic Era |
| Abandoned: Tales of the Setting Sun

This is a nice attempt, lipk. :)
The forums need pull threads once a while (although this is more like the "best SP add-on campaign on BfW 1.10", instead of 2013).

I am out of the range, though. On the list, the campaign that I played through the possible end at the time was only BMR, but it was on BfW 1.4.
Fate of a Princess/feedback thread: "What is in own heart that is the most important, not who you are."
Drake Campaign: Brave Wings/feedback thread, Naga Campaign: Return of the Monster, Saurian Campaign: Across the Ocean
Northern Forces - now on 1.12 server

Well, I agree that the above one isn't the best list of all possible lists, but I only came up with the idea on January 1, and I needed some quick'n'clean method to select the candidates. Next time, I'll try to start working on this a bit earlier.

I voted for After the Storm, by the way. I also love Bad Moon Rising and The Fellowship of the Clay, though.

Odd poll. Last time I looked Settlers of Light was officially discontinued and Bad Moon Rising was sadly playable only in debug mode (or with a certain amount of saveloading).

I almost forgot about this. So, the contest is over and the winner is After the Storm with a freaking number of 8 votes! Congrats, shadowm (even if I know that you care absolutely nothing about this)!

I have played all of 1.10 UMC campaigns. Legend of invincibles was good. I played it when there were lot of bugs present. Played tenth chapter recently. Played both iftu and ats, may be in 2013 begining don't remember exactly, in distant memory now.Enjoyed 'em. Well I have a doubt. this 'prolly' is not the right place though. But still, is there any place where I can find history of wesnoth which put these campaigns in place. Often, if I recall correctly found 'em slightly contradictory.

Well it's hard for me to choose (my choice is based on story and charecters and thats all i care about) for sure I would rate these above others but one among 'em may have to play again. As for the campaigns released in 2013 I would pick solidier of wesnoth, and then episodes of dragon triology.

I did draw up a timeline of UMC campaigns a couple of years ago, though there are several new campaigns that it doesn't cover: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=35872

Of course, you're probably already familiar with the wiki's timeline of mainline history.

UMC submissions are not screened in any way for congruity with mainline history or with each other, so with so many authors, there are going to be contradictions.

I meant all those single player campaigns which are there on 1.10 server :P. And by now I'm done with 1.11 as well and there aren't any 1exclusive 1.12 campaign till date.

Thanks. It'll take me some time to read. And moreover I'm unfamiliar with campaigns from 1.9 and lower. :(. Is there any attempt/plan to port popular campaigns from older versions to the latest ones?

That is the responsibility of the individual campaign maintainers, unfortunately. As a development team, we don’t have the resources to spare for such a task, and the most we can do is help people with any questions they may have and bugs they may encounter. All that said, we hope to reach a point where we don’t need to break compatibility with old add-ons so often, in the future.
