Mac version of Wesnoth 1.9 crashes

Post by elrondaragorn »

I've been encountering a problem where the game crashes while playing it under 1.9x branch version of the game. Emptying the cache seemed to help for a while but now, every time I try to plan a game, it doesn't seem to matter what era happens, after a certain point while playing the game, it would freeze up become unresponsive and had to be rebooted and reloaded. The timing of the unresponsiveness is growing more frequent not allowing me to finish a single turn without having to save or lose the progress made in the turn, I have a Mac Pro Operating system 10.6.8, and this only seems to happen on my model (Macbook Pro) in the 1.9 branch, the units and era don't seem to matter. This is the crash log I get from the computer itself when force quitting, I couldn't find it with the console application. In the most recent scenario one of my games continously slows down, becomes sluggish, and freezes up at the beginning of turn 9. This is a new development that hasn't occurred in previous versions. I eliminated the preference file hoping it would help and it didn't. Additional info. When I converted Player 1 to human control I did not experience any problems in turn 9 or 10.

I'm getting an over limit word count error trying to put the crash report in the body of this messageI trying to use attatch file

This doesn't happen with anything earlier than 1.9 and in 1.9 you can't change between human and computer players. If you change it when reloading a game, the game doesn't recognize the change- if it was a human player it stays human controlled even if you've supposedly changed it to computer when reloading the game.

~~ Thanks,

Just want to confirm, 1.9 on my macos10.6 partition on my macbook hangs when the AI is thinking, sometimes totally locking up game (or system if I'm in full screen). 1.9 in Ubuntu 10.10 on same machine runs fine, some stuttering when panning between leaders/attacks sometimes stutter as well, but no freeze after about an hour of playing. 1.8 is smoother all around though.

1.9 branch crashes intermittently

Post by elrondaragorn »

I've been having continual problems on my mac and no one elses's with the programming playing for a while and then either slowing down and hanging or cashing and having to be force quit. We have tried running wesnoth with only snow leopard and no other programs running, re-installing a clean copy, and other trouble shooting techniques, including comparing my add-ons with Temuchin Khan's Mac version running under Leopard and he doesn't have the same problem. This happens regardless of what era or map we use. We can't reproduce the problem to show you because it seems to happen no matter what we're playing or who we're playing with only on my computer

This appears to be a repeat of your previous message.
See http://gna.org/bugs/?18144
Hopefully the issue will be resolved in 1.9.10

I'm having the same issue running 1.9.9 on a Mac 10.6.8. It also hangs if I leave it open for a while without doing anything - for instance, if I'm playing, and then walk away for three hours and the computer goes to sleep, when I come back the program will be hanging.

Otherwise, it seems to randomly hang in the middle of a move - the colored wheel comes up randomly and the program hangs. Doesn't crash, just hangs.

Get 1.9.10. It's out and resolves this issue.

Hi.

I've been playing Wesnoth 1.9.12 after my very long Wesbreak, and I've found that it's just not working properly.
My computer (Mac OS 10.4.11) really doesn't seem to like side 3, the green team. On turn 4 of the Eastern Invasion: Elven Alliance, just as the Orcs' turn starts but before they do anything, Wesnoth crashes completely and I have to turn it off via the button on the computer.

Does anyone know why this is happening after 1.9.10?

I used to have this same problem in the early 1.9 releases, indeed it has occurred to a lesser extent at times in 1.9.10 and 1.9.11. However, I don't think it is an actual crash, more that the computer temporarily appears to crash while making calculations. Just give it a few minutes, if it's not resumed, then it may be more serious, however in my experience with 1.9.10 and 1.9.11 it usually only hangs for a couple of minutes at most.

Just wondering, does the crash occur whenever there is a third side present regardless of what campaign or scenario you are playing when it happens, or only when you are playing that particular scenario Eastern Invasion? I haven't played EI recently, but there's a chance that it might be a campaign-specific bug.

Also, in Mac OS X 10.5 and higher there is a 'force quit' command that lets you literally force a non-responding application to quit without having to shut down the entire computer via the power button. I've never used OS X 10.4 (I was still onboard the MS Windows train back then), so I'm not sure if the force quit command was present in that version of OS X, but in 10.5 and higher the force quit command keyboard shortcut is command-option-escape.

Well, I've only played Eastern Invasion and the first scenario of Liberty, so I'll get back to you on that. :lol2:
I got a side-three-freezing effect while playing my UMC, but I figured that was just an incompatibility problem.

I think it's in OSX 10.4 as well, but Wesnoth was freezing my entire computer.

And ahh, yep. Thanks - turns out my computer was only frozen for around 5 minutes, then the grunt attacked, then I had another 5 minutes to wait for the archer to attack, and 3 minutes for the wolf rider to move...you get the idea. Still, it does work itself out after a while, so anyone who's using 1.9.12: it's not fatal.

EDIT: Just to clarify, it does run, it just has a momentary 'oops moment' occasionally. After the short freeze it goes back to working normally.

could you try to run it in windowed-mode? there's a good chance you can get into the activity monitor and post a callstack...
