I takes 33 sec to load the savegame

Post by soulmate81 »

I have performance problem with loading saved game.
I takes approximately 33 sec each time.

Loading savegame is slow regardles if it is loaded from titlescreen or from some other game already running.

Savegame file attached.

Wesnoth was compiled by me.
gcc 4.1.1
(no additional flags
just "./congiure; make ; make install)

Wesnoth language : Polish
CPU Intel Pentium 3.00 GHz
GeForce FX 5200
1Gb RAM
Fedora 6 2.6.19-1.2911.6.5.fc6,
Wesnoth 1.3.1

P.S. If you need any additional information about my SDL libraries version, please tell me how can I check that(regular.p[at]gmail.com) (I'm not very advanced linux user)...I know only the "sdl-config --version" prints: "1.2.10"

Did you ever have a look at the size of your file? It is extracted 8.8MB of pure text that has to be parsed. There are some other things you can do to improve loading such a massive file, at least you could activate binary saves, they should be a little smaller and also a litte faster to parse (since parsing the whole file is done when loading a game).

Yes, I've noticed that, but I don't know why it is so big.

I have made many loadings for the same save (when my character died for example ) but is this the reason for savegame file to grow ?

Also how long does it take to start a new campaign? (Time between you select difficulty, and the first story picture appears.) This is how long the game parses standard data and campaign data. When you load a game, these data are loaded too, plus the saved game.

So we would know which part of the 33 seconds is spent loading campaign, and which part is spent loading the saved game.

And you have *hundreds* of units in your recall list. That is probably the main problem...

Yes, I know this is strange that I have houndreds of units

I was about to report it as bug.
I've noticed that in some scenario (I don't remember which one, when I got back home I will check it) when I tried to recall some unit , I saw multiple "instances" of the same unit.
I will take a screenshot to show you what I mean.

I recently compiled Wesnoth 1.3.1 , but I've noticed the same bug with "multiple recall units" in version 1.2.2 (installed form binary packaged for Fedora 6)

I think this bug has been fixed in 1.2.3 and will be in 1.3.2 (no release date set yet)

I'm playing 1.2.5 on Windows XP and have the same problem. Saving takes over two minutes on the map "7a_Into_The_Depths" (quite annoying if you have autosaves enabled). Loading a minute. Additionally the units in the recall list are there multiple times. E.g. I can find the name "Aleron" 88 times in the text version savegame. As the name is used two times per entry it seems, I should have him 44 times in my recall list (it's hard to count in the game). So it doesn't seem to be fixed in 1.2.5. Btw. there is no recognizeable difference in save/loadtime between binary and text saves.

I'm downloading the newest developement now. But I've read the savegames aren't compatible and I don't want to play the campaign again to this point, so I don't know if I can find any further information.

I've noticed that big saved games are mostly composed of replay info, statistics of earlier scenarios and such. Perhaps there should be a "release statistics" button in the save a game dialog.

Bug still in XP version 1.2.5

Post by Sloppydogg »

I am playing XP version 1.2.5. This is my second time to play this scenario, since I experienced the same bug in an earlier version and had to abort the campaign. I thought the bug had been fixed, so I uninstalled the old version, deleted my saves, and installed 1.2.5. When I get to "Into the Depths" I have a dozen copies of each unit in my recall list, including Minister Hylas, Ethiliel, and the elves that escorted Sir Garrick to Wesnoth. I have tried manually dismissing the duplicates (a real pain since you have to confirm anyone with much experience) to no avail. As soon as I save and load the game, they're all back.
