Dealing With Hax
For those of you who managed to beat the AI in Wesnoth, you would know the difference between "normal" and "hax!" luck
for those of you who don't, here's my luck intensity scale:
Mage hits 2/3 or 3/3 - Normal
60% defense unit blocks everything - Bad
Mage/Adept misses completely - Horrible
70% defense unit gets hit 4 times - Atrocious
assassin refuses to die, levels up - Haxpoet
adept survives ulfserker attack - Lottery
Now here's a short guide to surviving bad luck:
1.) Every time you make a move, understand that you are taking a risk, no matter how small the risk is.
2.) 70% != 100% (think of it as a test score)
3.) 30% != 0%
4.) Don't check the EV every two seconds, its very addictive. EV addicts develop symptoms such as perpetual whining.
5.) Bad luck, when combined with anger, develops its own vicious circle:
terrible luck -> beserk -> anger overwhelms logic -> bad moves -> etc...
6.) Watch out when you're playing against the devs, they hax. Although most of the time they don't need to hax to beat you.
7.) Wesnoth has a built in system that detects new players and grants them insane luck. Assume the worst luck when playing against them.
8.) "hope for the best, prepare for the worst"

That is a common mistake, but due to the complexities of the races, and taking time of day into account, 30% = 0%Cannibal wrote:3.) 30% != 0%

Re: Dealing With Hax
Assuming the best possible defense, this would have...4^120/10^120 chance of not happening...or something like guessing a single proton in all of known space, or something similiarly insane. Although I guess that is just the chance of not getting hit at all.Cannibal wrote: adept survives ulfserker attack - Lottery
Actually, maybe it would be possible. If it was a slowed ulfserker, and you were in colosseum, and you had a dark adept with 150 HP, it might be non-astronomical for it to survive 30 rounds.

Re: Dealing With Hax
I do this, and also check status, especially when I am playing with four players, or a long 1 vs 1, and I have to do something. So I end up clicking on the menus over and over. I don't think I am the only one.Cannibal wrote:

Some (rather obvious) ways to minimise the effects of potential bad luck:
1) Avoid highly tactical situations involving a small number of units.
2) Play defensively until there are a large number of units on the field. (makes for a long game)
3) Favour units with lots of small attacks rather than few large ones.
4) Favour high HP and resistance units.
5) Favour cheaper units.
(I guess northerners and dwarves are the best luck-killing factions)
I tend to do the opposite of all of these, which means I either win or lose quickly (I don't normally have time or patience for epic battles.)

This thread really makes sense when my fire mage shoots at an elvish marshal with a 70% chance and hits none.

Isn't it unfair when the devs are using hax against us? C'mon devs, play a free and fair game =)

Relax dude, that wasn't meant to be an insult.Glowing Fish wrote:If you keep on whining about not liking the devs haxing luck in Wesnoth, you can always write your own TBS game where devs aren't allowed to cheat. Until then, stop whining.TheChosenOne wrote:Isn't it unfair when the devs are using hax against us? C'mon devs, play a free and fair game =)

Something that has 10% chances to happen (like an adept missing twice) is meant to happen several times in a game as you're likely to engage more than a hundred battles.
Even in 1 turn, when you lead 10 attacks/defences, you have high risk to encounter such an event. Considering that you can't tell the future, you're not likely to know when it will happen (buttered-toast theory would tell : at the worst moment).
As a consequence, you have to take care about "what will happen if my unit miss ?" in your strategy. Of course, if you have insane bad luck, this won't help anyway...
Note about the 1st message : mage has ~35% to hit 3/3
units with 60% def has 36% to dodge 2/2
