Game Creates too many Auto Saves (OS X 1.2.1)

Post by rogue »

I've been playing BFW 1.2.1 on Mac OS 10.4.8. The game is making a new auto save file every turn.

Example:
The_Elves_Besieged-Auto-Save1
The_Elves_Besieged-Auto-Save2
The_Elves_Besieged-Auto-Save3
... etc

If I play the game for any significant amount of time, my save folder is flooded with auto-saves. I can't say that it's actually a bug, but this is ridiculous. Shouldn't it only auto-save the most recent turn?

It was like that before and it hasn't been really helpful, because if you screw up something you often might want to go back further than one turn (you might have noticed the options to do that in the menu).

However, if you feel like you don't need them, type Shift+":" (you won't need shift on some systems, depending on your keyboard layout) to get to the command line. Then type "nosaves", this will discard autosaves.

Also, once you finish the scenario it'll ask you if you want to save the game. Selecting yes will delete all the autosaves.

Minor Correction: it should delete all autosaves for that scenario. Autosaves from other scenarios should not be deleted.

Hmm... perhaps it would be good to have an autosaves-per-scenario preference that can be set. Then, if you have it set at 5, on turn 6 the autosave for turn 1 would be deleted. Again, if you had autosaves from multiple scenarios it would still keep them around. This would probably be a pretty easy modification to do. Low on my list of things to do since disk space is cheap and lots of autosaves make a developer's life easier, but if someone posts a patch on gna and assigns it to me, I would be willing to consider it.

BTW, the "deleting autosaves" part appears not to work when the autosaves are not of the form ScenarioName_Autosave_Turn-X (which often happens, at least for me, since if you load a game called ScenarioName_Autosave_Turn-X, all subsequent autosaves will be of the form ScenarioName_Autosave_Turn-X_Autosave_Turn-Y).

Did that make sense?

Which is a bug (cf. bug report #8308).

BTW, the command "nosaves" works only for the game on that I've entered it?
