I think these are starting to look very good. Ghosts should be a little blurred IMO :)

They are fine. Shadows have a unique ability and are a unique unit so they should look like a bit different.

Old images have wesnoth style. You can think a change was needed (i don't think so), ok, change them, but use the same style. There are lots of unique units (see yeti, vampire lady, heroes, etc), and no one is blurred, no need to blur, transparency does the work already.

the waith has basically the same style...

the problem i have with this is that, while the shadow (as in thing under the unit. ;) ) looks awesome, it really doesn't fit with the rest. I think no shadow would be fine, but if you need one at least make it look less floating- misty.

I definitely think my old shadow graphic based on the Ghost is better. (if you want red eyes, it has them too...) Have you seen it?

P.S.: Jetryl's is way better anyway.

Oh, BTW, I think Jetryl's Nightgaunt is as bad compared to his Shadow as the current Nightgaunt is compared to the current Shadow. In other words, it's better than the current one but definitely needs work.

Red eyes are cliche and yuk. Make them plain dark. I prefer this image to both the old one and Jetryl's, though.

Why I didn't make mine red.

*sigh* Seems that this graphic has been recieved as follows:

Either people love it, or, they think it doesn't fit in the game, with the current graphics. They complain that it lacks definition, or is blurry.

That second complaint is not so valid because the same is true of the current shadow image in-game.

My problem with the existing shadow is that, unlike the wraith line, it has no definition. It is a solid shape - about the shape of a bent banana, or a tornado. It's just an outline, with eyes slapped on. I love the unit idea, but the graphics could have been made by anyone.

In truth, I learned from fmuñoz's mistake when making this - I did the same thing wrong that he on my first attempt, and forced myself to rethink how I was doing this.

Besides - this is one of the top units that people clamor to have replaced.

And don't worry about making it fit in-game. Ever since eleazar, frame, and christophe set into this thing, we have moved beyond *traditional* pixel art. We have a lot of tools that old games did not at our disposal - we, for one thing, have actual alpha maps. Old games were lucky TO have transparency, unless they ran on the SNES, but even there, they had a single alpha percentage they would set.

None of this fancy stuff about having wisps of see-through cloth tracing off of a opaque body and all. It really comes down to a choice. We can either suck hindmost tit from SquareSoft's legacy, or, we can forge some new ground.

This has already been decided on the terrain front - with the exception of swamp, we have replaced every single terrain we used to have with something far better, and in many cases, something that would have been impossible on a nintendo, or even a pc without 32-bit color.

Now - I personally like most of the unit graphics we have now. There are very few that merit a complete redo - The lvl2 wose is one - I can't think of any others off the top of my head. With some of these, like ghosts, I would like to take the liberty of using the new tools we have available to us.

This game was created because one guy wanted to make a game that was unlike most others out there, one that he would actually enjoy. Strangely enough - I feel the same way. I don't want this to be another final fantasy 2/3/whatever clone. I want wesnoth to BE the game that gets imitated, to BE something unique.

It's a funny thing - people balk at how different wesnoth plays from many other games. And yet - they keep coming back for more... :)

I am going to further EDIT the base frame. I know the attack and defend frames are fine.

In fact - I've been thinking about this for the past few days, and I think that I will take at entire ghost tree. The wraith line will have ground shadows - if they look good, and will have much more varied alpha-shading.

Tigrenzo's image has the exact same problem the old one had, which is the body is basically one solid color with no shading and a wierd looking dark blue outline. It looks like a cardboard cut out. Also, the white claws make it look worse, not better. (in addition... that graphic IMHO didn't belong in this thread, you should have started a new one).

Jetryl's is awesome, although i don't understand why it is so grey... why not a bit more blue/black in it?

For reference, I've finished an edit of the wraith - this is what it looks like with a shadow.

I did the following:
• Made unit opaque, then carefully alpha'ed away the drifting cloth.
• Added the ground shadow (duh).
• Made the sword glow, in a subtle way. The sword will thus be MUCH more visible, as you can see in the following (and, what you can't see it the way it will look in the attack frame - not unlike how it is now, just more visible:

Nice. :)

(i'm suprised the wraith's sword being covered by the HP bar hasn't been fixed. It looks wierd, having the wraith wield an HP bar. :) )
