is this the most frustrating game ever?

Re: is this the most frustrating game ever?
That's probably the problem. The games does say it. Maybe you just don't care. If you right-click on any unit (even enemy), you can get extensive description. Anyway, play tutotial first, there's lot of explanation there.gayasswesnoth wrote:the game doesnt even say which units fight best in what terrain, which units move best etc. for example (deleted) horsmen take ages to move on rock but a footpad wont. i mean what is up with that, and why dont they tell me that before i start buuilding them...
If Wesnoth were anything like Starcraft it would be a bad game. Wesnoth requires strategy.tigrezno wrote:I think wesnoth have a "little" frustrating point. I've been a starcraft player for many years, and i find that wesnoth is like starcraft but not realtime. This means that when you see you can't do anything to win the game, you die in a few minutes-seconds (case of starcraft), but in wesnoth, your agony extends through the time, making you a little crazy.
Also, comparing starcraft and wesnoth, you can see that "flood unit" attack works very good in starcraft, but not in wesnoth. Yesterday i bought 42 units (bats and walking corpses) and only 6-7 drakes killed all them.

Are you saying realtime games don't have strategy? :-/Gafgarion wrote:If Wesnoth were anything like Starcraft it would be a bad game. If you don't like starcraft, don't blame it, lot's of people love that game (like me), and if you don't use any strategy it's for sure you die.

Hi everyone, just discovered this little gem today. Great fun for such a lovely petite game. But I have to say it resembles the first AoW a lot, hell yeah, my first impression was "F, this game plays just like AoW".
Anyway, I have a little problem here:
I play Pearl Harbour (yeah, the japanese locking up americans in cages across the map, j/k), I meant Harbour of Pearls, and I tried so hard but never managed to kill both of those leaders. The blue guy was easy, just mass the mermen up and kill him, but the green guy just had too many villages, he kept on pumping troops out, killing my mermen on my attempts to backstab him. On the land front, his whelp trolls just crush my elven scouts and elven rider, am I suppose to charge them with horsemen? Also, how do I tell the horsemen to do normal attacks instead of charging? There's no point charging when their hit rate is so darn low. Except for extremely rare cases like 1 hit kill or they are on the verge of getting promoted.
On a side note:
http://jove.prohosting.com/benscats/cgi ... s/units.pl <---- should be elven, not elvish, wtf is elvish? do we say dwarvish or we say dwarven :p?

Why do you post this here? Post it as a new topic.
Re: @_o
You need to get your horsemen promoted to knights before they get swords to go with their lances (_very_ useful!) - lots of HP too.pip8184 wrote: On the land front, his whelp trolls just crush my elven scouts and elven rider, am I suppose to charge them with horsemen? The way to take out the land based leader is to use scouts and cavalry to take villages before night, then fall back to hold a line with a second rank of healers (it's _really_ useful to have promoted a shaman or two by now so you have high volume healing - extra slow attacks can be really good as well - almost any unit can survive being next to slowed trolls...). Rotate units around dropping wounded units behind the healers and moving fresh/healed units back up front and you should manage to lose very few units. It is frequently not worth attacking at night (especially the first night), excepting if you can get a good melee (or even charge) attack against an orc bowman, or to use missiles/magic against the melee only orc units. When dawn comes marshall your forces forward and then have two turns of trying to inflict maximum carnage - if you do enough damage you can press on at night and drive them back - otherwise let them attack your healthiest units and use healers to keep everyone alive until you can attack back... a mix of archers and fighters gives you a chance to do some damage - and horsemen make decent line troops as they have plenty of HP and aren't very vulnerable to blades (they often provoke the bowmen to comes after them, then you drop them back and move the fighters up to cut the bowmen apart). The other thing that is really useful in this kind of fight it getting Konrad promoted so you have the leadership bonus - really powerful with Elves as they have lots of attacks so a bonus on each attack really stacks up...
Hope this makes some sense - if anyone want to move this to a B of P /general tactics topic feel free, but I think it's all been said before in various places. Learning to use daylight bonus and survive the night is important when facing orcs - mages & horsemen are particularly affected by this, as both deal a lot of damage, but are also vulnerable - both are also fairly vital units (Grand Knights can take down most things in quick time and have so many HP, and mages become either great healers or the ultimate units to dislodge really stubborn enemies - often leaders in castles).
Good luck,
Tim.
time?
where can i find the time to abuse konrad and my shamans? the battle before Pearl Bay lasted only 28 turns, and I've abused it to the max, barely made 1 elven captain, 1 elven hero and one elven marksman.
However, i finished the Pearl Bay map last night, at the very last, 24/24, turn, konrad got 2 kills, also promoted 2 knights, 2 elven riders, 1 marksman, 1 captain and shamans got very little exp.
So now basically my retinue has 2 knights, 2 riders, 2 captains, 1 hero, 2 marksman, 1 mage (almost promoted) and 2 shamans (wonder how you gonna get them to druid ~_~)
Edit: i'll get back here after soccer
, we have a game today

as suprising as it could seem, shaman should be used against trolls... their slowing is very effective, since the slowing attack is ranged, it doesn't reply, th troll attack only once during his turn (the shaman can survive that) and during your turn you soften it with other units and give the finishing blow with the shaman...
shaman are hard to levl, this is part of the game... but it should be very high on you priority list... you need healers and white mages are horendously slow. their attack make them better at fighting, but there is no way they can run around to help other units...

yay
I used my shamans to abuse the orc grunts
, now i've got 2 druids
, after bay of pearls i've got 1 red mage, 1 captain, 1 hero, 2 marksman, 1 knight, 2 druids, Konrad is almost lvl 3
, 1 horseman almost promote, 1 mage had 2 kills
. Just my scouts are very poor, I just recruited them at Bay of Pearls, so they suck real hard
