Where do people get these ideas?

Post by Glowing Fish »

I think a number of you have played with me on multiplayer, under the name mnharris, so you all know I am not usually a crazy, mean spirited person.

But there are a few times when I do get a little annoyed, even at newbies. Who shouldn't know better. But sometimes I hear them come up with just utterly perplexing statements. One I have heard twice in the past week or so, is that playing with 5 gold per game "makes the game go faster"?

WTF?

Where do these ideas come from? Where do people get the idea that 800 gold, 30% XP, +18 income and a gigantic six player map is the ideal settings? Do we have to have some documentation on this? Like, a tutorial for multiplayer? An etiquette session for multiplayer?
Don't go to Glowing Fish for advice, he will say both yes and no.

A tutorial might help - although I don't know whether anybody with this "problem" would read it.

Maybe they just like playing long games with large armies. I have no idea where the " playing with 5 gold per game "makes the game go faster" comes from though. :P

We need some player ranking to separate newbies from experienced players. For each rank you player would get some additional rights. Like this:

level 0: can participate in 1v1 games, experience modifier 70%, 2 GP
level 10: can participate in 2v2 games
level 20: can participate in 1v1v1 games, experience modifier 50-80%, 1-3 GP
level 30: can participate in 3v3 games
level 40: can participate in 2v2v2 games, experience modifier 30-90%, 0-4 GP
level 50: can participate in 1v1v1v1 games
level 60: can participate in any games, experience modifier 10-100%, any GP

BTW: Whenever your playing time exceeds opponent's playing time by more than 1 hour, you automatically lose a level. If this happen at level 0, you are banned from multiplayer server for 1 year.

Last night, my housemate challenged me to a hotseat game, suggesting that we should play Undead vs Undead on Cynsaun Battlefield, with 5 gold per village, 500 starting gold each and no time limit.

I tried not to laugh at him, I really did try!

Well, it's completely right. I have seen quite a couple of those games but i never saw one ending properly. Or even reach turn 10. Most of them are over after 3 turns :P .

So, it does sound like they're 100% correct then. :-) 3-5 turns is pretty quick.

:?: As I see quite many of these unusal games on the MP server .

Whats the point in these settings? Up to now I never was able to finish one of these games. FRom my experience the other players just throw units at me without any strategic or tactical consideration and leave latest after turn 8 without comment.

Are there any serious players playing with these settings?

What is the motivation behind lowering the experience to 30% . Just to play with high level units?

Nah, it's just part of the way things work in an online strategy game. To take the illustration of Warcraft: the most-played game mode is DotA. I used to play this mode a lot at the time it was still RoC-only, and you basically had 2 kind of people there: the ones who tried to play seriously, work in team, have strategy (however minimal it could be at times), and the random guys who played and disconnected once they got owned too much, because they must have assumed it was no different than playing against bots, and so it was ok to ruin the fun of 9 other people.

I'm thinking the same's going on here: there are the people who like this game for what it is, a hard-to-master strategy game, and those who just like such or such features but are more interested in "mindless" maps. Unfortunately, in my experience, the latter always tend to be part of the "leaving, unrespectful people" group. Your experience seems to confirm that impression.

Wesnoth can be quite boring, all turned based strategy games can be boring.

Some people just wanna waste some time and not really enjoy the battle.

:\... Dunno why they're playing wesnoth though...

A year or so back I tried to play through a game like this. I had six players (can't recall the map), 30% xp, 1000 starting gold. I reached somewhere in the neighborhood of 75 turns before I finished up the match. Trust me, I played fast and against the AI, and it took me around four hours to win. It's not faster in any way.
Fear me! For I am higher level than you!

lol yeah, that happens all the time... When I watch such games, i ask, "why the hell 30% exp and 300 starting gold?" "goes faster!" "lol?".. So I tried explaining, but that didn't work.

I guess people think that with mass money you get mass units that own other units, but they forget the opponent has mass units too :P
