If you use the default package management tools on this OS in their default settings you do get the full game.zookeeper wrote:Better fix: use a non-lame OS for which you actually get the game as a complete game by default.
Hmm, wasn't expecting such a non-sensical statement from you anyway, got a bad day?

Oh, cool. In that case one just shouldn't use lame package management tools I guess.Soliton wrote:If you use the default package management tools on this OS in their default settings you do get the full game.
I thought that was well within normal bounds? Well, anyways, I've had a bit of a bad day too.Soliton wrote:Hmm, wasn't expecting such a non-sensical statement from you anyway, got a bad day?
Calling debian a lame OS is rather nonsensical.
(It's OK to say your flavor of *nix is better than another, but rarely have I seen people saying another flavor of *nix is actually bad... that's reserved for M$.)

I have this problem with Ubuntu as well. I only have sound effects, no music.
did anyone manage to help the original poster, or are we all just going to bash Ubuntu?

Re: fix
The answer was already given, make sure you install all the wesnoth packages, obviously wesnoth-music contains the music.hugh nicks wrote:I have this problem with Ubuntu as well. I only have sound effects, no music.

of course
it is an answer, but it's not very clear cut. i used the add/remove programs in Ubuntu to install BfW. That's where i discovered it, and it seemed as though all extra dependencies were d/l'd. i wasn't sure if it was a bug or not. i was also confused as to why i had no campaigns that came with the game, and thought that just must be the way the game was created, for other ppl to write the storylines.
going through synaptic, one can find the additional packages that were not installed, but again, that's not always what people do.
the original post said "new to Ubuntu and BfW", and i had assumed that new meant just that. make sure you check the synaptic package manager and search for "wesnoth". that will bring up any packages that might have been left out. that's how i would have helped.
please don't get me wrong, i'm not nitpicking or trying to be insulting. that's just one thing that throws ppl off of forums, is that more experienced users assume that less experienced users know what the hell your talking about. i didn't clue in until later on about checking the SPM, and i've only used ubuntu for a few weeks.
again, i'm not trying to start a war, i just think that by posting the most detailed (or at least "click here, then click here") answer the first time is the most helpful. i have learned craploads from this forum, and am not putting anyone down.
cheers,

..and I expect people to make a bit of effort on their own. I'm probably just grumpy from the amount of inane questions people ask in these forums which clearly shows they have made absolutely no effort whatsoever before asking
. For some reason I thought synaptic had been mentioned earlier in the thread, if I hadn't been under that miscomprehension I would have mentioned it myself.
Trying the add/remove programs app I see it only installs the wesnoth-data and wesnoth packages when they should depend on the others as well. The same under synaptic. For some reason synaptic seems to ignore mentioning suggested packages unless you tick off the option of treating suggestions as dependencies. The program 'dselect' does it right, so it seems to not be a packaging problem. I would try the ubuntu forums and see if there are any discussions about this.

SPM
using synaptic in ubuntu last night allowed me to add all the original campaigns and the music (which i think is pretty cool). i just opened a search window, typed "wesnoth" and all the available packages came up. install to your hearts content.

Re: SPM
Right. I was talking about default behaviour which seems to not select the recommended packages.hugh nicks wrote:using synaptic in ubuntu last night allowed me to add all the original campaigns and the music (which i think is pretty cool). i just opened a search window, typed "wesnoth" and all the available packages came up. install to your hearts content.
