Music Ideas!
Hello everyone,
A first post for me!
I like Aleksi's idea of "music for a boss, or a special situation". I think it should be used sparingly though, sometimes less is more. It might sound funny if one of your orchestral runs was cut in the middle when your leaders health went down... Maybe not. Would you use fades at all? How flexible is the coding on this front?
I like the previous ideas of a long running loop. A loop that ran through 6-8 quite different sections of 1-2 minuets in length each could fool the brain into thinking the music had changed because of an in-game event, as well as being less monotonous on the ear. This wallpaper style of music has a deceptive amount of charm especially in a thinking game like Wesnoth, and is less distracting than a movie style soundtrack in my opinion.
I knocked together my own quick sketch of what I thought a couple of the sections could be: (its un-mastered)

See what you think! I think I'd like to do a bit of work on Wesnoth..
Other sections could be a fast orc war-drum type section maybe, or a purely horn section etc... I like my game music to be simple and as effective as possible, but not too distracting.

How flexible do the music people need? We can certainly do fades (we currently do 0.5 second fade-out between music always). We could also allow control over the possible sets of followon music and transitions, and choose whether to force transitions to "condition" pieces or wait for next break...samuelf wrote:Hello everyone,

Thanks,

I want to have just background noises - forget the music, play all background noises!samuelf wrote:What is the consensus on using background noise? (wind, sea etc..).

It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

Can you break and fade in the middle of a track driven by in game events?, or do you have to wait for the track to finish?. If so, maybe that would favour many short sections stitched together as it were..?

Cheers Moroder!Moroder wrote: Impressive track!
Northerner theme, of course. But could probably work for a necromancer ritual as well (the first section).
The background sounds idea sounds good, but wouldn't it mess with the music?
I tried adding a mountain wind track to the second half. I think it works ok, but it may be inappropriate for the game. I'll put it up if there is an interest..

Any hope of this track getting into the game?
I agree. It would be great for "Isle of the Damned."highhole wrote:Wow! :D . I like this music very much. IMO it would fit to the Httt Scenario where Konrad fights again the undeads with the outlaw units (the neutral humans).

Does it? Shouldn't we double-check on that before using it?Dragon Master wrote:Once again, this sounds great for IotD. For some reason the first part reminds me of an old DOOM bgm. Mind if I take this for safe keeping in a possible campaign?

My guess would be this:
Since this is just some random guy who only has 6 posts, and who hasn't really proven that he's legit, if the music sounds similar to that of an old game it's quite possible that's because it was ripped from an old game - thus making it illegal for us to use it.Dragon Master wrote:For some reason the first part reminds me of an old DOOM bgm.
For I am Turin Turambar - Master of Doom, by doom mastered. On permanent Wesbreak. Will not respond to private messages. Sorry!

I wouldn't want this track in the game. I don't know for sure what Aleksi would say, but I'm pretty sure he'd agree. There is not much to this track besides atmosphere. Ethnic drums always provide that. There isn't much more here in terms of tasty orchestra scoring.
Maybe some people want anything that has some kind of atmosphere, but left up to me, I'd say this isn't up to the standard.
So, maybe someone would like it for a custom campaign, but I don't think it belongs in the standard Wesnoth library.
If the samples were a little better, with a few more instruments, and some good changes and variations, this might become something good.
Once again, to any composers reading this - please read the composition guidelines before posting music! When you post, let us know what you're posting it for. Do you want your music in the main game? Do you want feedback? What do you want us to do with the music?
