You should maximize your work with the pencil wether you make art like Neorice pixel by pixel (personal I think it's more challenging to do) or you just paint the figure with the base colors and than you should throw away all other tools and use the pencil for the whole detailing. So more parts of the picetur are left to the imagination of the viewer and at a first glance the whole stuff will looked blurred.Ranger M wrote:I was having a go at doing the whole thing with the pencil tool, and then improving it afterwards, so basically what you did is on my todo list, I just haven't done it yet.irrevenant wrote:They look quite pixelated to me. A play with the smudge tool looks like it'd help anti-alias them a bit. eg.

probably it will probably needs some refining but against some backround it will give some nice effects.

It's personal taste how you far you are driving this but if you do first choose the light source (and in my case the wind direction) divide the sprite in three-quarters dark the rest in light and pull it though

An intersting way of doing it (I hadn't thought of dividing the sprite up into quarters) The thing that I find with using the paint tool a lot, is that no matter what I do, I always end up with a lot of the sprite having semi-transparent bits in it, which Is why I am trying the pixel by pixel method, (I think that I'll eventually settle for a mix of the two, because pixel by pixel helps me define the shape of the unit, and then using the paint tool to smoothen and shade, and then finish off with touches of the pencil to help define the bits within the unit.wayfarer wrote:You should maximize your work with the pencil wether you make art like Neorice pixel by pixel (personal I think it's more challenging to do) or you just paint the figure with the base colors and than you should throw away all other tools and use the pencil for the whole detailing. BTW, did you just make that now? because I've never seen it before.

Is that particularly a problem if it looks good against the various backgrounds?Ranger M wrote:The thing that I find with using the paint tool a lot, is that no matter what I do, I always end up with a lot of the sprite having semi-transparent bits in it
If it is, couldn't you just add a solid background (shaped to the unit, of course) on another layer before you export?

which is why I chose to do it with the pencil tool first, because then I have an outline (with most of the shape and detail of the unit already included) which I can use the paint tool on easily.irrevenant wrote:If it is, couldn't you just add a solid background (shaped to the unit, of course) on another layer before you export?

Well that's part of the joke the semi-transparent bits give them at least some kind of edges if you don't make them.Ranger M wrote: ....

Thais style is called golden section but it was mostly used in the architecture. Yeah art architecture and mathmatics etc... it works all together though it just how the world goes around.
The sprite was the latest design for the Aragwaith Spearman lv 2 though I haven't posted it until now and it is only a unfinished showcase.

So something like this is a step in the right direction? (included the old one for comparison)
surprisingly enough it ended up looking alot like this (see below), style wise, when I had origionally thought that I wouldn't be able to do anything similar to it for Wesnoth.

Personal I would say yes though I alway aimed for something different. As realistic as possible only if your art is close to the real world the art will be good.
Though I wasn't very successful with this attitude many claimed it was too blurred and so on. Again it is a matter of taste it is your choice if you like it that way else there are many others.

Everyone loves Wayfarers style, and with the new Necro-line, Jetry seems to just bordering on his style. Except just cleaning it up and making it more recognizeable.
On Ranger M's work:
$#@# that is good work. I like what your doing with the Arendians. You've improved alot, since you first art... with the level 2 outlaw horse

Ok, I'll work on the clasp (either put more shine on it, or a jewel), and with the sword, I'll probably make it longer to pronounce it more, but also remember that in the forums, about half of the sword doesn't show up because it is white (basically) which blends in with the background.Zhukov wrote:Seconded, that warden is nice.
One thing: the clasp on his hood/cloak kinda blends with his face and arm. It took me a while to realise what it was.
Another thing: IIRC he uses a double-bladed sword (odd idea, oh well), that isn't exactly obvious in the picture.
on forest he looks like this
