In past I have already many times said that elvish scout should not have 3rd level.

I concur.

Programmers,

How hard would it be to allow scenario authors to limit advancement of units?

Could, for instance, WML (which I know next to nothing about) contain a section which would have lines that overwrite lines in any .cfg files? For example, the campaign could not allow any Scouts to advance (say, because the hay in this part of the world is too poor to allow horses to thrive):

Code: Select all

[overwrites]
     [filename=Elvish_scout.cfg]
          advanceto=null
     [/filename]
#and so on
[/overwrites]
The engine would then replace existing configuration variables with these new values.

I can't think of any other uses off-hand, but it might be valuable to allow this sort of thing. (Hmm, maybe there would be lands where magic didn't work, or scenarios in which higher-lvl units would be too powerful or remove the challenge.)

Just a thought.

I like the image, but I think the stats should be but a subtle improvement over Outriders.

IMO:

hitpoints=52
sword attack=7-4
bow attack=6-4
defense in villages=60% (and take Outriders up to 50%).

@Eponymous Archon: That kind of thing would be a little difficult, but I might be able to work out something. Maybe.

In general my opinion is that not all units have to have a third level, but if users are willing to contribute good, fully-animated artwork for the third level version of a unit, it will generally be accepted. However, don't be surprised if the new unit is given stats that aren't so powerful.

In fact, I'm tempted to be a little sadistic and drop the Outrider's stats down a little, and make the Gladerider only a little better than what the Outrider is now :twisted:

If there must be 3rd level scout unit... then I agree with this.

Again, I think the "scout" factor should be increased for the lvl3 rather than the "fighter" factor

give lvl3 extra movmenent/Ambush rather than better attack, it would change it into a great scout and a correct tactical unit rather than a "blitzkrieg master"

Retreat ability

Post by enki »

How about adding a retreat ability to high level scout units? E.g. when the unit takes a certain amount of damage it retreats one hex[1]. It can only retreat if there is at least one hex that is empty and maybe outside the enemy zone of controle).

[1] even if the attacker still have attacks left

Okay, so I guess we should go ahead and add this unit.

Btw for a name, how does "Elvish Horse-Archer" sound? I think it sounds pretty simple, and to-the-point, no? :)

I think Elvish Mounted Archer is a tad better.

If you want to make it an elfish mounted (or horse) archers, then you should adjust the stat to make it better with a bow than with sword. I think you could take away one melee attack from the lvl2 and 3 in exchange of a bit better range attack, something like 9-4 at lvl3.

I think "Elf Mounted Ranger" sounds better and makes more sense than "Elf Mounted Archer". Rangers are scouts.

Personally I like the idea of Mounted Archer, with an improved Ranged Attack. But whichever works. Perhaps you should just create some stats and throw it in Dave.
