Forum restructuring - discussion

Here's a mind-blowing idea:
How about all members are "Restricted Member"s until they reach what is currently known as "Forum Regular"s which would then just be called "Member"s?
This would get the point across that we are all members and that some are restricted in their posting.
Simple, elegant, blunt.

I would prefer something like that but it can't be done automatically. There are a lot of new users to keep track of and it's easier to add users with the best quality posts as they emerge than continuously track all users.
Ranks have no effect on posting but can be automatically assigned based on post count.
Usergroups have a big effect but must be manually managed.
These two constructs would be much more useful if they could be combined.

So users can't automatically be placed in a usergroup when they join?scott wrote:I would prefer something like that but it can't be done automatically. If not, why not just change the current "Forum Regular"s into "Member"s?

Anyone else find it bothersome when a thread they post in gets moved to a section they cannot post it?

I kinda would like to continue discussing topics that are deemed signficant enough to warrant special attention.
But maybe it's not so bad, I can help come up with interesting ideas, and then it gets taken out of my hands and other people have to deal with it. Maybe that's not so bad after all...

Funny story. I've managed to both become a 'forum regular' and be stripped of it in... twelve days?
I'd call myself Lightning Man, if I didn't already know someone by the monkier.
I probably earned the stripping to be honest though. *Shrug*
Long as I get to keep working on my bat animation, and maybe more contributions, I'm okay with it though. Forum titles, climbing the ranks, and the like... don't mean what the used to for me.

Beat you. I just got mine revoked within less than a week.SmokemJags wrote:Funny story. I've managed to both become a 'forum regular' and be stripped of it in... twelve days?
What's the deal guys? I mean, I, like SmokemJags, don't really care about ranks but this is silly. I feel like I've been slapped on the wrist without being told what I did wrong.
ya, I sorta felt detached when the thread I made was like snatched out of my hand. But I guess I'm cool with it. Eleazar is doing a pretty god job defending the idea

I think the current systme is pretty good. I think you can't just earn respect through the number of posts u make, but through the quality of them.

Maybe I should mention my entire stay here has been 12 days in all, not 12 days from becoming regular to losing that status. You still beat that?db0 wrote:I just got mine revoked within less than a week.

That I was made forum regular so quickly speaks legions for the quality of my posts.I think you can't just earn respect through the number of posts u make, but through the quality of them.
But this is true, it doesn't matter the amount of posts you make.
What matters is the number of bad posts you make.
I made one and called someone an attention 'oar' (replace oar with something that rhymes with it)
That one misdeed outshines any good I may have wrought.
I had no idea it was even that bad, but I'm still learning. Probably shouldn't have even been made forum regular in the first place. (It was a wonderful gesture by someone but in hindsight, perhaps one made too hastily)
Hell I know I'm a forum 'oar' myself, freely admit it.

My avatar in an undead gunslinger mind you

I still have no clue what I did wrong. I'd appreciate at least a PM explaining that decision. That I was made forum regular so quickly speaks legions for the quality of my posts.

Obviously nobody that matters has that problem.SmokemJags wrote:Anyone else find it bothersome when a thread they post in gets moved to a section they cannot post it?

It is a time honoured tradition for people in superior positions to take underling's ideas and cut the originator out of the process. Sometimes it works. Many times it doesn't. And it invariably annoys the person who contributed the idea in the first place.
Perhaps the powers that be could organise a day pass for you to 'address the board' when one of your ideas is deemed significant enough to be considered by 'the board'. Just remember to address them all as sir and make sure to touch your cap before you address them if you ever get the chance.
Alternatively, couldn't they start a new thread in the developers forums with a link to the original thread. That way, the idea can continue to be discussed in the open but the developers can have their discussion untroubled by the forum irregulars. I think this would also minimise the obvious annoyance of the current method of taking the whole thread away from the people who developed it and implicitly telling them that their input is no longer valued.
