Bat Sound File

Post by SmokemJags »

I always thought it was hilarious for a little bat to groan like a man, so I edited a sound file and came up with this.
I think it's of decent quality, I tried to make it short like the other sound files in the game but perhaps it's a little too short.

bat2 is the sound file I was thinking to add to the game.
batflyby is the original file I edited.
This is the site I got it from.

It says 'royalty free music and sound effects' so I'm pretty sure it's okay to edit one of their sound files and use it in game. Maybe? I dunno. For all the Law and Order I watch, I'm still not 100% on the legalities of it.

It sounds that the permission to use of theses files is restricted to personal use only, which is probably too restricted to be compatible with the GPL.

7. If, as a consequence of a court judgment or allegation of patent
infringement or for any other reason (not limited to patent issues),
conditions are imposed on you (whether by court order, agreement or
otherwise) that contradict the conditions of this License, they do not
excuse you from the conditions of this License. If you cannot
distribute so as to satisfy simultaneously your obligations under this
License and any other pertinent obligations, then as a consequence you
may not distribute the Program at all. For example, if a patent
license would not permit royalty-free redistribution
of the Program by
all those who receive copies directly or indirectly through you, then
the only way you could satisfy both it and this License would be to
refrain entirely from distribution of the Program.

Seems to me they are permitting royalty-free redistribution. This shouldn't refrain from distribution of the program as the GNU is written, yes?

Well it is written on the webpage :
These sounds are collected from the web and are generally available to everyone for personal use.
PIR did not create these sounds and cannot grant absolute permission for any use other than personal.
So for example you cannot use them to promote something, which would be permitted by the GPL

If the work has no commercial value, the violation is mostly technical and is unlikely to result in legal action.
So :P

I'll see about getting it from somewhere else. Seems so silly sometimes, but there's good reason behind it.

Or someone could say they made a bat sound file themselves by actually recording bats with a microphone. What a coincidence it happened to sound exactly like what I found, eh? Heheh. ;)

I tested it in game and it sounds awesome, if a little on the quiet side. You all can use your groan wav file and I'll use this sound for my 'personal use'.

I really don't see the problem. If everyone who downloads the game and then downloads and uses this sound seperately... same effect as if they just downloaded the game with the sound file already there. Still all that legal mumbo jumbo is there for a reason so if the consensus is to not use it, no matter how cool I think it is, I'll just have to abide by that and keep looking.

While I'm looking though, are there other sound files that people can think of off the top of their head that would make nice, if minor, additions to the game?

IMHO the fire.wav sounds as if there is noise on my boxes (at least in the beginning)
The bat_chirp.wav sounds cool, but would have to be amplified I think.
