The Dark Dwarves

Post by Nyr Oagorith »

first i must note that i have no graphics yet for this idea, and do not consider my skill will ever provide for it or even a campaign, but i still would like to proprose it so here:

Background:

I come to you now with a tale of a the grim and often scorned upon past of our people, and of our glorious beginings...You see young one, we dwarves were created in the mountains far to the east, long before the humans came to this land, out of earth and rock we came, and soon fell in love with our home. We mined and built the great empire of Hraum for our great goddess Knalga. We paid little heed to the other creatures of the surrounding plains, and soon became greedy in our wealth. We dug too deep into the mountain side and soon awoke a great, and evil dragon of the underworld.
Our once great clans, shuddered and buckled under the advance of this new creature. It melted our homes with its flame, and incinerated our greatest warriors with ease. Soon we were forced to flee from our home, and come west to found the great kingdom you and I live in now; but one clan stayed. They were the Ghundaugi, the chosen of Knalga, and they stood in the defense of their great homeland with almost unbreakable will. Yet the dragon laughed at their stubborness, and chose to curse them, and bind their souls to his will. They become the dark dwarves...slaves to the great dragon god.
So even now, young child, they watch from the east...waiting for their chance at complete dominance...of the world. Now...run along and play...

The Fall of the Dragon

Later in the dark dwarves history they were in a great war with the orcs to the steppes in the north. All had been going well, until the orcs allied themselves with the lizardmen from the southern savana. The lizards dug beneath the dwarven kingdom, and sacrificed themselves, to see their cities cave in on themselves killing the dwarves. Once they even managed to do that to the great dragon god...sending him hurling into the lava pits below. The explosion that followed shook the very foundation of the world, and sank the surrounding land into swamp...One might assume that with the dragon dead the dwarves would be free, yet their hearts were so blackened from the generations of enslavement that they still worshiped him as a god.

so far this would explain: 1- The reason the dwarves came to make the their kingdom from the east. 2- The reason the orcs have some alliance with the lizardmen as seen in campaigns such as Out of the Swamps and Heir to the Throne. & 3- The reason the land east of wesnoth is now swamp and not savana.

Example Unit Tree for the Ghundaugi Dwarves (I expected a colaberation on the part of making the civilization tree):

Ghundaugi Warrior-- Ghundaugi Hammerer-- Ghundaugi Ironbreaker
-- Ghundaugi Bezerker-- Ghundaugi Wildhammer
Ghundaugi Priest-- Ghundaugi High Priest-- Ghundaugi Chosen
-- Ghundaugi Pyromancer
Ghundaugi Guardsmen-- Ghundaugi Sentinel-- Ghundaugi Wallwalker
Lesser Impling-- Fire Impling-- Greater Impling

It's an OK idea, follow up on it, expand, make some art or find some willing artists, and it might be a pretty cool faction. Heaven knows the Dwarves need some racial variation.

Wow. Nice the attempt to explain some reasons to the Wesnoth reality, and nice idea for the Dwarves, though it will be hard to bring something new for them; which are priests attacks? some kind of dwarvish sorcerer would be nice . What about dwarvish mutants (ghundaugi priests could have altering powers)? I tried to draw them (see my avatar) for Diekil's faction, but it seem abandoned. Eventually, if you're ok, I I could adjust them for Ghundaugies.
Slow and steady wins the race.
...but he could regret it...

Yay, flavor.

And more Dwarves too!. God knows the elves had their faction bloom, and this is a welcomed change.

ok thanks for the responses, i was starting to think i wouldnt get any...

i know i wont make the art for this so anything would be welcome, i figured their armor would be darker, heavier, and would make them slower than the other dwarves, and i figured the mages might have some sort of turning into stone ability...

Read Elezars post on faction art.

Ao get art for you an artist needs to get very intrerested in your faction. Most of the good artists are doing in-game graphics like death animations and walking animations.

Also, making base images for your faction helps a lot. It makes your faction actually exist and artists are more likely to improve already made art than make a new unit themselves.

If all else fails go to the wiki and look in the art contributions section. There are a lot of goodies hiding in there. :D

Overall, chances are you won't get anyone to make art for you
I got lost in thought, it was unknown territory.

The Outcasts need your feedback

slower than other dwarves? - it would make them nearly unplayable

graphics? - it's easier than you can suspect. Just take a try and start re-editing and then you will find that creating unit from a scratch also is not unreachable.

I think it would make a good faction, I like the story line you created there a lot...
It would be nice that dwarves have some magical attack - that would add some more depth to them.

Yaahh pyromancers! anyway, I really like your idea of dark dwarves since there's already enough elf factions. Why not instead of making them have slower-than-dwarf-movement, make them have incredible defense in caves and mountains but do terrible in plains and other open areas? As for art, you could make them have almost black skin and make them look tougher than normal dwarves. Perhaps make them need less armor becuase their skin would be part stone?

sry for that carcataphractos but my pc was broken for al long time, anyway i was thinking of new campaigns and stuf for dwarves and look like i met sombothy else that does that to so why don't we just make a faction or somthing like that: mayby we could call the faction dwarven tales or dwaven legends or somthing like that. anyway i was thinking of putting in the elemental faction to and mayby some other. but i need to think about it first . ist nice to see sombothy elde trying to stop the devollepment of wild, dark, god knows what else there are ELVES

I would like to see this, err... Wyrm Dwarves? develop. Thus, i shall make a modicum of brainstorming on this thread.

If the lines aren't enough, maybe you should give them some enslaved lizardmen (Saurians, i guess) too. After all, some of them may have been taken as prisoners. They could be the ranged support and forest/sand defense for them.

How about this for a stretch:

Code: Select all

Ghundaugi Warrior ->Ghundaugi Hammerer ->Ghundaugi Ironbreaker
                  ->Ghundaugi Wildblood ->Ghundaugi Wyrmblood charge

Ghundaugi Priest ->Ghundaugi High Priest ->Ghundaugi Chosen; melee plague and more hp
->Ghundaugi Pyromancer; strong magical fire attack

Ghundaugi Guardsmen ->Ghundaugi Sentinel ->Ghundaugi Wallwalker; steadfast

Saurian Slave -> Saurian Savage -> Saurian Wyrmclaw; blade melee

Saurian Hunter -> Saurian Stalker -> Saurian Blackspear; javelin thrower, poison lvl2

Lesser Impling-- Fire Impling-- Greater Impling
One thing i don't understand are the Implings. Where did they came from and exactly what are they (fire-spitting beasts, fire creatures, some sort of dragonling)?.
