Poison Status Effect Question/ Thought

Post by Maester Pixel »

Something was on my mind the other day while playing Wesnoth. This may sound silly, but here me out. I want to know if a spriter could change the poison status effect image?
Let me explain; the poison graphic, which (for those who forgot what it looks like) is a bottle depicting a human skull on the front. The reason why I ask for it to be changed is because the fluid in the bottle does not seem to resemble someone suffering from poison, but actually looks like in my opinion a unit who possesses it as a usable item.

Don't get me wrong though it is a decent looking sprite, but it does'not seem to fit accordenly with the poisoned after effect image. For all I know I could be totally wrong here and everyone is just dandy with the current sprite an may not want it changed at all, who knows.....

So anyway what I like to ask is for one of the available spriter's (if any) out their if they could possibly sprite another one up, if its not too much too ask, that is. Just a small request I asure you. Thanks in advanced.
An before I forget I had created an example just for this occassion, not that I would use it, but to give an idea of what I meant. Mind you though its just a skull without a bottle, but atleast it does'not look like an item anymore.

Not a good way to start off a first post but whocares, I certainly don't.

I agree, making it not look like an item is good.

However, I would like some green something in there since it's often used to depict poison. Don't have a clue how it should be done though, some green drops, a puddle, a cloud... :)

Looks like a perfectly fine first post to me btw :)

Would colour swapping help?

I agree, but the cloud you mentioned should be used without the human skull.

The simplest solution is often the best :)

Add crossbones.
Skull + crossbones == poison.

NO, skull + crossbones == pirate. :?

A skull alone can mean many things, though.

arrrrhhhhh!, attacked by enemiy unit, you've been pirated, and now can be recruited in substandard form for much less, and the money goes to the enemy

sorry, funny mental images of wesnoth pirates, and this was the first.

I like the idea

I've committed this to SVN - it's in the game, now. Maester Pixel, you might want to send a note to forum member "ettin" about being accredited.

Thanks. :)

Actually, Bonehead's right. *EDIT* Though of course, it means pirates too...

With or without crossbones it's a definite improvement, though.

It's true a white skull and bones on a dark background means pirate, but what about a green one?

Well lets find out, shall we? How does this version of the poisoned sprite look now with the newly fitted bones behind the skull? Also, I darkened the previous shade of green with another colour type (green) and while doing that I thought I fix up the skull a little.

Looks good. Doesn't make you think of pirats.
