Other TBS Games...

Post by Invictus »

The previous topic I started yielded many positive results. Many thanks :D
However this topic is more of personal things.
I'm looking for games that have the some of the same characteristics as Wesnoth i.e Turn-Based ; Random Map Generator ; Worthy AI.
All I ask is for your insight. I do know of some games out there showing these characteristic. The Civilizations, Lux (risktype game), Master of Magic, Age of Wonders.
Doesn't matter if it's commercial...just want to know if I'm missing out on any games out there.
Thanks!

I don't remember if Heroes of Might and Magic has a random map generator, but it fits the other two criteria, I think. Its amusing to play, although its a rather complex game.
For I am Turin Turambar - Master of Doom, by doom mastered. On permanent Wesbreak. Will not respond to private messages. Sorry!

An RTS's for the TBS lover: Sid Meier's Gettysburg. This game is very tactical, intelligent, and a lot of fun.

Also Europa Universalis (another RTS) is a fun, if cumbersome and buggy, game.

The Combat Mission series is, if a bit dated now, most outstanding.

There was the MAX serie, Mechanized Assault and Exploration.

Although I want to make one, but with different caracteristics than BfW, as more ressources.

Turn based, hex based, chance based, strategy: World to Conquer.
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

Where can I download it?

Many thanks to all for the feedback. I actually did the same topic on the Lux forums and immediately the moderator closed it!

Anyhoo...I do own Heroes of Might and Magic 3. It does have all the needed characteristics; however it falls prey to players simply forming uber armies and rampaging through the land.

I have also tried freeciv...that will never die for me.

I can't seem to get hold of a copy of M.A.X. Unfortunately (or fortunately) I live in South Africa and rely on digital download evermore. Any place I can get it? Oh...and we can't personally import games here as well. I must just be satisfied with what the retails get.

Actually only on their main page. The impending new release on the other hand will be downloadable from the page I linked to previously.

You don't consider the better chess AIs as worthy? Or do computer chess games not count here?

Computer chess AI may be worthy as far as defeating players, but its impractical in more complex games - brute force would not make a 'worthy' AI in Wesnoth. I believe that's the reason it's excluded.

Well, though I didn't include it in my quote I was also assuming the requirement of 'Random Map Generator', and was also making a few deduced assumptions about the kind of game the OP was talking about.
