Swordsman upgrade should come from Fencer not Spearman
Just an idea.
The Spearman upgrade tree has three branches (pike, jav, sword) -- the pikeman and swordsman and a little too similar I think. The choice doesn't seem all that meaningful (firststrike, minor stats).
I think the Swordsman should shift into the Fencer upgrade tree, so that there is a choice to go to Duellist or Swordsman. It would be the equivalent of donning armor, and losing the skirmishing ability. It would also make the Fencer a little better value for money (more upgrade options).
The only problem, I think, is the graphics wouldn't fit that well.

Explain how it makes sense with game balance. If you have the swordsman start coming from a 16 gold unit, not a 14 gold unit, it decreases in value, and already it is usually not being chosen over the pikeman, because pikeman is in many ways superior.
Also, explain how it makes sense realism wise. A fencer is kind of like one of the "Three Musketeers". A swordsman, OTOH, is a trained soldier. How does a swashbuckling loner suddenly become the unit that is the heart of the Wesnothian army? They even use very different weapons. A broadsword (which appears to be the weapon of the swordsman) is much different from a rapier.
I don't think spearman -> swordsman makes sense with the weapons they use, but it makes sense with the training the units have recieved. Fencer -> swordsman makes a BIT more sense with the weapons, but not nearly as much with the training.
