Slashdot discusses Wesnoth...

Post by Dave »

I found this thread about Wesnoth on Slashdot: http://games.slashdot.org/comments.pl?s ... d=12267698

I've gotta say, I think the responses are some of the most hostility toward Wesnoth I've seen. I guess once as many people go around saying they hate Wesnoth as say they like it, we'll know we have a truly good game. :)

Eh, this is a small discussion. I've seen rather large threads on /. about Wesnoth, mostly with glowing reviews.

Is it just me, or are the /. crowd considerably less intelligent than the target audience of the site might suggest?

Some of the folks object to playing the same map over and over. I never get bored of playing the same map. There's enough chance in the game to make it interesting even if I am reexecuting a tried and true strategy.

I also think they dismissed the game to quickly and are ivory-tower king of the world nerds. (As opposed to us cool nerds).

I find it odd when people suggest that a game be competely changed to suit their wishes. If a game is completely different from the kind you enjoy, why don't people just ignore it, instead of saying the game is crap? :?

Mostly, I'm referring to the person saying (from what i can tell) that recalling should be removed...

The story was about FreeCiv, not Wesnoth, and aside from the post pointing out Wesnoth, none of the replies was scored above 2.

In other words, it's nothing to worry about. Not everyone is going to like Wesnoth's style. A lot of them will whine and [censored] in places like Slashdot. Just set your threshold to 5 (or at least 3) and you won't have to read as much crap.

Put your threshold at 6, so you won't see _any_ crap :P

Yeah, I think there's significant proof that there's tons of strategy :) It's just not the kind of strategy they're used to.

I have often taken comfort in the mantra, "If no one is complaining, you're not doing anything important." If nothing else you can enjoy the fact that the game has risen to the level that the single helix troglodytes feel compelled to comment.

Some people will complain about anything. Others don't see the need to say anything. Still more have yet to even hear of the game. And some of us really, really enjoy the game.

The Slashdot crowd are like any other group of people - a few winners, a whole lot of losers. (apologies to George Carlin). But there are some intelligent people there, and it's really useful for when you should be doing work, but don't want to. :)

Again;
I find it amusing that a person who thinks "u" is a word is telling us what to do.

Or can't type correctly...

Or without any facts tells that random hitting is unbalanced. How is it unbalanced? I want to see where and how.

Also, what makes elves unbalanced? They're perhaps the only faction that's really balanced currently... loyalists are one, too.

Dwarves do need to be balanced, but everyone knows that... I guess.
