Oriental/Eastern Campaign

Post by Dave »

I think it'd be cool if we had a far-eastern/oriental campaign with completely new units. It'd demonstrate the power of the Wesnoth engine, as well as allow a new and fresh way for people to contribute.

Would anyone be interested in developing such a thing?

Aghh!! We will all die!!!

Seriously, though, although it might be interesting, I think there are several other mods that would be more so: an arabia-india-egypt-ish mod (camels, elephants, and chariots) or a gunpowder age one (cannons, handguns, cumbersome muskets, but swords and such are still useful), both sound to me like better ideas.

Is there any particular reason you picked the Far East, which really has nothing interesting except samurais and ninjas? :)

My complaint with this is, for it to make sense*, you would have to have multi-hex attacks. Which no longer exist. So I don't think a campaign in the future is a viable option.

Also, nukes would just wipe out the whole map.;)

*: Since even now, we have mobile weapons that can shoot several miles, and immobile ones that can shoot several hundred miles.

If you consider airplane bombing a ranged attack, then it's several thousand miles in the least.

EDIT: I'd love to make a European/Middle Eastern (Greece, etc.) campaign, but I'd need to learn some WML first.

EDIT2: isn't there some creative way someone can fake multi-hex attacks w/ WML, such as, when a soldier on a ship moves onto a cannon hex it fires towards a certain direction, doing X damage at Y% to any unit within Z hexes? I recall someone (EP IIRC) made a RNG in WML, so this is probably possible, if not awkward..

Well, I don't know if I am any good at art, but I can claim quite a few years of study of Chinese mythology, and I have lived in Taiwan.

I want to design a Kirin unit. I hope Jetryl won't mind too much, since a Kirin isn't really the same as a unicorn.
Don't go to Glowing Fish for advice, he will say both yes and no.

I'd personally like to see some historically-based maps/total conversions. Feudal Japan (I was thinking Nobunaga Oda, specifically), Ancient China (Three Kingdoms and the fall of the Han, or earlier), Roman conquest, etc.
I love fantasy as much as the next guy, but I'm also fairly avid about historic events (strict historical and "fantastic history" (epic, not 100% accurate retellings of history)) and find them just as interesting as fantasy.

I see an overabundance of WW2 "warfare" games (American Civil War as well, and a bit of WW1 and Vietnam), but not many older military conflicts.

You see such games mainly because they are the first historic wars in which semi-modern guns are used, and therefore fit the FPS description, which may have made them popular with other genres as well.

Maybe the American Revolution or the conquest of America by Cortez or Pizzaro?

I don't think historical reenactments (or whatever you would call that) is the way we want to go, but the methods of warfare in the eras you mention are, IMHO, very interesting.

The conquest of America was actually little more than a big rout. The Spaniards had guns, swords, ships, horses, armor, and diseases against bows, canoes, and spears. Plus, Montezuma did think them gods.

The American Revolution was interesting, however.

A far oriental era, imho that would be awesome.

I'm thinking at samurai, ninja, but also at fantasy creatures like tengu (flying birdmen) Oni (big brutal demons) or Kappa (little turtle like humanoids)...

Maybe that could be just a faction, instead than a era. I'm going to think about it.

1) What's with everyone reviving dead threads all of a sudden?
2) I think there's already an "Asia Mod" by Thelost1, and also a Taki faction found on the server under "Taki+Imperial Era".
hey.
