When victory or defeat finally come the game ends rather abruptly. It would be nice if after the victory was announced both sides could remain chatting until one chose to leave.

Interesting. I like this idea.
It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.

Or even against the computer, it would be nice to have an opportunity to look around or save the game, or whatever.

You could always just chat in the lobby, the only disadvantage being that there are other people there... but very rarely (never, in my experience) will there be enough other people in the lobby chatting that it prevents conversation.

So, I don't agree with the need to stay and chat argument, but I actually do think this would be a cool feature, especially if it was made universal for all games, even for campaign, for victory and defeat. So, say if turns run out, or the objective was just to get your leader to a specific location, it would be cool if you could play things out for fun anyway.

Maybe even have a chance to see the replay afterwards?

I think once a game is over, a player should decide when to exit the map - should be able to scroll around, looking at the final batle scene, check the statistics/unit list etc. instead of just being automatically taken back to the lobby.

I think support for this change is unanimous. Coding it might be a bit trickier, though.

How would it practically work? By replacing the "End turn" button by a "End scenario" button?
