Wesnoth Mythology and Folklore Club

Post by Great_Mage_Atari »

Hola everybody!
I have decided to try out this "club" idea on the forums for those of interested and fascinated in the world of mythology and folklore! I wanted to set this up to get peoples different views on dwarves, dragons, elves, myths, legends, creatures, and all the other good stuff, not necessarily included in Wesnoth! I was hoping that this place could not only be a place for discussion on various topics, but also a place for people to go for references on new ideas for stories, campaigns, and such. The ancient world of mythology and folklore interests me immensely, and I hope to discuss it with you! I plan to discuss a new topic every night or so or even every week. Before I start discussions, I would like to know of all who would be interested in participating in discussions such as this. It is not a commitment, obviously, but I would like at least some participation!
Thanks!

Erm...I think I'm going to regret this but...sure I'll do it.

I'm a fan of Greek Mythology, especially The Odyssey. After playing all 4 Boktai's, I became a big fan of norse mythology, vampires, and aliens. (Do aliens count?)

Yeah sure! Aliens are technically a part of folklore. I do like the Greek Mythology (the Romans just don't do it for me). Odyssey is a great epic, along with the Iliad.

If you're mentioning the Iliad and Odyssey, don't forget the Batrachomyomachia.

Good to see some interest in this! I am still awaiting more people to join. Any requests for topics may be sent to me personally for review! Once more people have joined, then the discussion will begin.

Sure. Anybody can join. Though I'm not sure bots, tech, and future count, as they are quite futuristic and even present.

You should just start a discussion already and see where it goes. I don't really see the point in signing for some club, however cool it might develop to be. If the discussion grows into something interesting, I might participate, but count me out for any kind of sign up.

This, of course, is only my opinion, and I don't mean any harm.

Could the chimera have existed in ancient greece as an A: biological weapon using very good but lost technology to construct a hybrid of a mix of animals leading to some really creepy monster that broke loose from it's testing facility? or B: some sort of tank like machine used to keep the peasants in line?

I like where this is going.
Count me in, on similar rules as Dixie: Might participate, not so fond of "sign up" whatever it'd mean.
Second idea doesn't exactly fit: Chimera wasn't controlled by anyone. If we're talking tanks, Khalkotauroi fits way better: they were made of bronze (basically, everyday use metal for Greeks, such as if we'd seen anything made of metal we'd assume it was made of steel), were made by God-Blacksmith Hephaestus, and, last but not least, breathed fire.
First option seems way more probable : Greek Mythology, is not only full of such weird hybrids (Hydra, Cerberus, and it's just very beginning), but in folktales they are related. Most of them are said to be bred by Typhon and Echidna*, called Mother and Father "of all monsters", respectively. I’m only one smelling mad scientists at work?
ALSO NOTE: Above post is "just for fun", not actual Dänikenese "ancient aliens/scientists" idea. If such things are too silly for other participants, I will stop.

Hm... Greek mythology. I think it's kind of strange that the Gods are sooooooo powerful but they need heroes to save them. Um... Anybody wondering?

Oh, and personally, if the greeks had so many monsters, they could take over the world.

Of course, lots of them were unique and prefered to devaste Greek regions, and they were mostly feral and/or controlled/released on them by the gods. And of course, as Ancient Greece was lots of city states, they would probably have destroyed themselves with their battle monsters. (Or, on the other side, Alexander the Great effectively took over the world).
And yes, beings in myths tend to have very strange genetics. On that matter, how are heritable curses (e.g. the Tantalids) inherited? Are they recessive, dominant or X-chromosomal (or Y-chromosomal)? (Just for fun myths and reality).
