looking for modern combat eras

Post by Rahabib »

I am new to Westnoth and want to get into creating some eras, but I am not an artist and dont want to reinvent the wheel. I searched around, but didnt find anything to what I am looking for. This could be put in the art section, but I figured it would be better placed in the Era forum. If I am mistaken, then please move it to the proper location.

What I would like to do is create an era/mod that is based on the, now sadly out of print, board game - fortress america. This is a board game where you have 3 opposing sides (Russians, South Americans, and European powers) all face off against the U.S. in a near future conflict. The Americans simply have to hold out for a number of turns to win, and the other three team up to wipe out the Americans (I realize that the premise sounds absurd, it was made in the 80s - but it was a fun game, and I probably would alter the sides and story to be a bit more realistic).

The game I would like to make is based on the board game, but will use the standard Westnoth ruleset, so its far from a carbon copy and should be easy to do, apart from finding the proper art. Since I am not an artist, I was hoping to find a modern combat era with tanks, helicopters, jets, infantry, etc. that I could use and edit from (with permission and credit of course). I could not find anything on the forums nor the addon manager for those. I figured someone had to have done this, or at least created the art for it.

If not, then if anyone is interested in co-creating this, let me know.

I saw that in the list of mods and installed it but it doesnt appear to have the art done at all. All the towns and such are still villages from the main fantasy campaign. Maybe I did something wrong?

You should just start with new sprites. Don't copy for an "original" campaign/era/faction.

I wouldn't do it without permission. But I think that creating new sprites would probably look better.

Sprites I think you could find (Modern Combat is a good start, there was also a little modern franckenpack, and a sort of tanks thread in art workshop not too long ago), but if it's villages you're after, I'm not sure you will find any... :hmm:

Edited with links.

You may need to make a whole set of custom sprites.

I think it would work best that way.

thanks. The community here is great. I am still going through all the documentation. Once I get a more solid plan in place I am sure some art/sprite help would be wonderful.

Well, if you need Frankenstines, ask me, if you need original sprites, ask Atari or a Art contributor. :)

I highly suggest you make a to-do list on here. Edit the first post and make a list of things that need to get done.
I also suggest not frankensteining an original unit!! Ask someone to help you if you need an original
