Make the UserData directory freely configurable in Windows

Post by Blutkoete »

Hello!

This might be something not many people need, but I don't see why it would be complicated or hurt all the players that never use it.

I've put my UserData with the downloaded campaigns and save games in my Dropbox (of course every cloud service would be fine) and symlinked it under my Linux computers. As there is nothing like symlinks under Windows, for that to work I would require to freely choose my UserData directory and maybe change it later as an option (with a "Move all files to new location?" function).

I hope it's not already implemented under Windows and I just didn't notice.

That way I have an automated sync for all my (ok, only three) Wesnoth installations. As I say, most peoply (almost all) won't want or need something like that, but if it's hidden somewhere under "Advanced options" it won't hurt anyone either.

What do you think?

Thank you very much,

Blutkoete

P.S.: I know there might (or will) be issues if I run Wesnoth on different computers at the same time, but that's probably the risk someone has to take for this.

P.P.S.: Another way would be to offer this as a feature if there's a thrustworthy free open source cloud service and automate it if someone wants it.

when installing wesnoth don't choose to store userdata within the executable directory and have a close look at the link in your start menu (right click / properties)

I just installed wesnoth few days ago on a computer with windows 7, specify the path to install UMC during installation IN the game directory. It works for the first download, but it seems to have forget it the next day and install UMCs in the weird userdata directory (users/appdata... ) after that. Maybe it's a bug.

Improvement would be to have an ingame menu to choose the download directory after installation. I don't find this option.

Also, I can't edit the game files when in the game directory... Even after turning them out of "read only" option. Maybe the strange userdata directory have something to do with this...

Linux is easier to use  Don't believe I say that one day...

The problem is that in newer Windows versions normally only programs run by administrators have the right to put files in the program directory itself. Thus when run as non-admin, the system automagically puts the files in some shadow directory.

In Linux, it is basically the same, but here the program always puts the addons in the user's home directory.
