Scenarios that concentrate more on troop management?

Post by Jerieth »

Hello all,

I have been playing Wesnoth for awhile now, and I really enjoy it, however, I am getting tired of some campaigns where their is a lot of focus on gold and villages. Are there any campaigns that maybe concentrate on a set number of troops, for example you may start with 10 and then you keep that same number throughout the stories (maybe given some opportunities to receive more troops). I know there are some levels I played where you are given a chance to recruit 5-7 soldiers and then during that level you can't recruit anymore. Levels where I didn't have to worry about taking villages or gold management where some of my favorite levels of the campaigns I played.

Are there campaigns out there that focus on combat more so than gold management?

It was fun playing all those campaigns, but now I want a different type of scenario.

Does anyone have any suggestions of scenarios that are out of the norm?
That have more focus on individual troops and troop management? Thanks!

In Bad Moon Rising, you play with just a set number of troops, if I recall correctly... Tho I'm not completely sure, I played it ages ago.

There are three episodes. The first one is completely units that you start with, and the other two are a mixture.

i LOVED Invasion from the Unknown - best campaign out there IMHO. It does have recruiting, but it is such a perfect mixture of storyline, new units, gameplay, and scenario diversity that I think you wouldn't mind it. [/shameless_quasi_advertising]. Currently only for 1.8, though.

Campaigns like the one you are asking for are a very difficult balance. Recruiting a good balance of units is the major focus of Wesnoth. Sounds like you may be looking for an RPG game :hmm:

So far, the only RPG scenarios (AFAIK) are:

1.8 - Zombie Apocalypse RPG; slightly finished, title explains all. There is also a multiplayer RPG called The Altaz Mariners which I heard was fairly good. Several other multiplayer RPGs by the same author (Bob_the_Mighty)

1.9 - Undead in the Sewers RPG; incomplete, WIP, title explains all.

Under the Burning Suns has many scenarios with a strong RPG feel, and I have gone through the entire campaign without recruiting before, so you definitely don't need to worry about gold and villages there.

As bigkahuna wrote, I remember going through a number of scenarios in IftU with the same handful of units.

Other ones I can think of are Ooze Mini-Campaign, A Rough Life, and what bigkahuna said.

I also enjoyed Invasion from the unknown. I recently found a scenario called The North Wind that was a lot of fun, but relatively short. Thank you for your suggestions!
