The game comes with the multiplayer server. If you are using Windows it should be in your start menu folder or in your installation directory as wesnothd.

yea i know that.. i know how to get add-ons. and i know how to put them up. i was asking if i could put up my own for more personal use. (like my friends and thats it). or if there was a way to put up a download folder that my friends could get to and install add-ons normally without the whole pubic being able to see and get them?

Well, you can't create your own private add-on server, but you can do this.

If you are using Windows, just copy the files from the add-ons you want to share from C:\Program Files\Wesnoth\userdata\data\campaigns.

You can then for example, put them on a disk, or transfer them via thumbdrive or portable harddrive, or even e-mail them if they are small enough. ;)

Then just have your friends put the add-ons in the same C:\Program Files\Wesnoth\userdata\data\campaigns folder. ;)

Now that I think of it, it would seem to make sense to have the campaigns folder renamed to the add-ons folder, or is that already done in the dev version?

No, it isn't, but it would definately make a lot of sense.

Could you please use more descriptive subjects? Other users can identify better if the post is interesting, or if they can help. You could have tried with the last part of the sentence: "private addon server".

It is quite hard to read the forum if a significant part of the messages are like "Can I?", "Is it possible?", "Help", "Newbie question", ...

If you are skilled enough to compile wesnoth, you can as well set up your own add-on server. Although i can't say how much trouble it is to install that on a rented webserver (and if all the needed stuff like ports and such is allowed there). Unless you have your own 24-7 server, of course  .

If you seriously want to get into this i suggest to stop by at #wesnoth-dev. There should be some people around that get you going.

A good point as most people will just tend to skip over threads with non-descriptive titles, as many people on these forums, especially those who might have the answer you are looking for, tend to have limited time to read through the forum. So they will skim through topics and just read and reply to those who clearly identify their question/problem, both in the thread title and initial post. Just a thought for the future. ;)

If you are using Windows, I know that some time ago campaignd might not work properly (or perhaps not even compile at all) in Windows. I have no idea if this has been fixed already (I'd bet not since the only major users of campaignd are our system operators on a Linux server).
