playing campaign...in multiplayer mode

Post by Christophe33 »

I think it could be fun to play what is normally the campaign in multiplayer mode...meaning that one or more other players will try to prevent you to do the campaign. There is some problems of course, and some scenario might need some adjustment, like in the Elf Besiege since it would be too easy for a player to block Konrad to reach the post, but it might resulst in some fun games...and would be a way to have the players reusing their army in this multiplayer-campaign hybrid. Is there any interest for this idea?

I've managed to hack a Turn 1 Savefile of "The Princess of Wesnoth" to be used for multiplayer. Unfortunately, it doesn't keep the recruitment lists; it defaults to multiplayer recruitment lists.

Multiplayer Campaign

Post by AT »

I think the answer lies in multiplayer campaigns. I would be more than happy to work on one (with my newfound WML knowlege), if it was possible to do effectivly.

Yes, yes, please do!

I always missed the possibility to play campaign cooperatively in the Warcraft-like games - though the game engine supported 99% of necessary things (via cooperative multiplayer). A campaign for two players would be great! Either them playing at two computers, or at one computer each one his/her turn.

If they would play at two different computers, then scenario messages should be displayed to both (or scenario author should be able to specify message target).

But to make a MP campaing, I'd need to know how to make seperate recall lists, how to go to new scenerios on victory in MP, and how to make special recruit lists. Not sure what is supported by the enigne yet.

I would like to make my Random Campaign into a multiplayer campaign, but until multiplayer campaigns are better supported I don't think it is possible. I would not even mind if there was only one recall list. The only problem I don't know how to get around is how to get to the next scenario during MP.

Possible in WML. Basically, at the beginning of each side's turn, you store the other side's recall list in a variable and unstore the current one's. However I don't see what is so complicated about adding engine support for it; store all human-controlled units in the recall list instead of just the ones for side 1; then skip units for sides other than the current side whenever the recall list is viewed.

An MP campaign should be formatted like a campaign instead of like an MP scenario; the difference should be that more than one side is human-controlled. The problem is that currently this could only be a hotseat-multiplayer campaign; AFAIK there is no engine support for online-multiplayer campaigns. But maybe support for this should be added...

what exactly do you mean? What kind of "special" recruit lists?
