Wesnoth for iphone is a possibility that has been considered. It would most likely take some heavy recoding to get wesnoth to work on standard consoles.

It will be crappy if it ever made it to iPhone, i have not seen a single free-game available on commercial gaming consoles that at least interested me a bit. Speaking of free, i do not know any legal free games on the playstation system, any game that is not bought for a fee or played on a disc is considered homebrew(hacked).

Wesnoth hasn't got a chance in a million, in order to be legal, it needs to be on a disc, to be on a disc it needs to be commercial, which would violate the ultimate rule of open-sourceware.

The only games that i've seen besides the ones that the commercial studios make, is those of really small size and bad quality, like a pac-man game for the psp, only a few hundred kbs.

Huh?

There is plenty of open source software that is both commercial and available on a disc.

Actually, thats completely wrong. The Iphone SDK is out (or will be soon), so you can develop for the I phone all you want. Same with the Ipod, and I think there may be an SDK for the PSP (not sure though). So yeah...

The SDK has been out for a few weeks now I think, so Wesnoth can be made to run under the iPhone using the tinygui. It probably wouldn't be that bad, either, though an updater/patcher that could be accessed within the GUI would probably be a good thing to be added before making it run under the iPhone, especially if you were made to pay a small amount to get the version on the iPhone store. Wesnoth updates a lot!

So, dave, if i get this right, you can make wesnoth for the playstation platform?

If so, sign me up on the wish list, because theres nothing like a good old free strategy game on a commercial console.

No, your not right. You said that open-source software couldn't be on a disk. Dave never said that the disc would be a playstation game. However, if you could get a hold on a dev kit for playstation, then yes, we could distribute wesnoth for PS (However, it would take a lot of work to re-write the code and such to get it to work with the platform).

All dave said is that OS software could be on a disk (read the GPL).

And sold. For Cash.

OSS means free as in speech, but doesn't mandate free as in beer. Would people be willing to pay $5-10 for the convenience of running the game on a console, and to support our dev team? Quite possibly.

It's a rather involved process. First, you get the developers the software development kit. That currently sells for $10,250 from Sony. Next, you convince some of them to learn it and start recoding the game for that platform.

We're several steps away from compiling at this point.
