TRoW - Troll Hole... help needed

Post by bt »

I'm playing The Rise of Wesnoth on hard, and I've gotten through all the challenges except for the Troll Hole. Actually, I made it through that too, but to do so, I spent all of my gold (about 350) and ended up in the red. After trying a couple of times, I don't think I stand a chance in the next level with just 100 gold, especially when the surprise shows up.

My army is mostly Royal Guards and Silver Magi, along with 3 mage of lights (including Minister Edmond) and some level 2 units. Any thoughts about what I should try, either in the Troll Hole level or before/after? Do I simply need more gold coming into the challenges? Should I tackle the challenges in a different order?

I was having the same trouble as you, more or less. I found that it was worth replaying previous scenarios to go into the challenges with more gold. The challenges themselves can then be completed faster, so you can get out of them with... more gold. It also helps to leave Cursed Isle for last, if you can, since that is the only one of the challenges that its easy to make a profit on.

Suprise? What surprise?
I finished TROW on hard and TRoll Hole was not an especially hard scenario(the last two are). First, I arrived in TH with some 350 gold
I played CI first, then the dragon, then TH and last the naga beach.
In the last 3 scenaria you will be hurting for gold, as you will be facing many enemies.
Now in TH I did not originally know where the trolls are, so I recruited, got a blue mage to kill the tentacles and level up(you can also level
other units) and WAIT for the trolls to come to you, close to your home, you can rotate and heal your troops efficiently while you wipe out their initial waves. Then, after the initial wave has been wiped out, regroup and
move towards the troll bases. (now you know they are in the direction the trolls have been coming from) This way you do not send troops to fight the spiders, for which you gain NOTHING.

Thanks for the help. I think I'll try putting off CI for last, and see if I can recover some gold.

As for the surprise, I'm being unclear. I actually meant the surprise in the next level (The Vanguard) where, when you attack one of the leaders, a line of undead show up. I figure I might have had a chance to beat the level in time had they not shown up. Of course, the spiders in Troll Hole are also a nasty surprise.

Not in naga beach. There is a fine line between losing and overrecruiting in that scenario. So my advice is go back and replay the challenges.
As for the vanguard, what I did is after beating the initial attack I left only 3 units or so to hold the western flank(this is where silver mages are extremely useful), reqrouped and went north, but did not attack the orcish warlord until I had a number of healthy units in place. Then the undead show up, but are mostly out of reach of my units and if they are not I
shield them by forming a ZoC with Grand knights.
After these undead are done, I split the army , with Burin and a few more troops, including mages I go north, while
the remaining army goes south-west. Make sure to kill the troll first and grab the treasure chest BEFORE you kill the last enemy leader, else you do not get the extra gold.
The last appearing undead I did not have to fight, as I can kill the orcish leader on the same round I start my attack, but
I can kill at least a few of them with units I do not need to kill
the orcish leader.
