Dwarven Fortress
I really love this game
a lot of ascii dwarves (mostly) at your command
http://www.bay12games.com/
To enjoy this game really need to read the manual a couple of times and have the wiki at hand to find how to do some things...
Feed them, bed them, clothe them, armour them, drown them, bury them .. and love them..
Also there is an adventurer mode (roguelike) too
Warning this game really waste your time
and needs a big iron despise no graphics.
(Windows/Linus under wine)
A good starting plan... put one miner to dig a large corridor (1 tile wide but leff room to made it 2 or 3 wide tiles later) to find the river, another one to dig a nice 6x6 room to get a carpenter (to get beds), mason workshop (to get doors) and fishery (to clean those fishes you should be fishing with all the other iddle dwarves) and another 6x6 later to store thigs (food first, later furniture) and install the beds in a temp sleeping quarters.
Once you get to the river plan for a river side underground farm them...

Hehe, I love it!
Thanks for the link.
I have now run 5-6 dwarven tribes to their fast ruin, and fineally managed to get a colony somewhat up and alive. Not looking forward to the first hostile encounter, though
After having overcome the hopeless user interface it is great fun so far.
I am really wondering how the mechanics of the late game is compared to the situation of the colony.
I often get announcements like this though: "Balin Fundinul, Miner cancels Store Item in Barrel: Job item lost or destroyed"
- Iwill have to put some thought to when they appear and what can be done about it

That message is not really important.. that dwaf as hauling somthing to a barrel or bin an another one just moved it... ignore it, the dwarf will try to find the barrel again.
The best advice to survive is going to the wiki and reading all the starting gives...and try your mix of them (1 vs 2 miners, dogs vs war dogs vs no dogs, tons of booze vs tons of seeds)
Once you know how to do things its easy survive the 1st year even with awful enviropment (took me 1 year to find that all my fish just get wasted beacuse I lacked a fishery to clean them)
...
Arrived at the inner lava river and started a nice magma smelter shop there... who needs wood barrels to brew when you can use gold ones

Not a bad game!
It's not even close to beeing finish... It's kinda even not passed alpha stage... but it already play very well!
Well, i can't say much about the graphic its kinda made of letters, numbers and that kind of stuff. "Hard to get used too in these times of days!"
But besides that it could kill alot of hours you diddent expect to lose:)
Did you like dungeon keeper? If you did, this is a must try. And problely the closet thing we get in years to that kind of gameplay. "EA should be shot!"
It has a very high learning curve, but give it some time and it will reward you plentyfull.
Great game.

Nice to see people encountering Bay 12's games, some of the others are just as interesting if you have a look. I personally haven't played DF, it keeps on getting recommended to me by a friend, but I never seem to get away from LCS.
Yeah EA should be shot, canning the development of DK3 was beyond cruel. Something they've been doing a lot of with some of the more classic titles that were due another release. I haven't been looking forward to Fallout 3 since I found out Bethesda had picked up the development. One of my friends sadly works for the EA console division and has been involved on several projects which have won him few points in my book, including Golden Eye: Rogue Agent, Icewind Dale, and most of the MoH games.
EA are now officially dubbed Sexy Fingers, "everything they touch they %^$ !"
I love the old Bullfrog games that Peter Molyneux was responsible for like Populous and Dungeon Keeper, Theme Hospital, Syndicate, they were different, frequently funny, and fun to play, if insanely difficult at times. Since he moved to Lionhead the games have not been of the same standard from Bullfrog, but then Black & White never got me as hooked as Dungeon Keeper did either.
