Re: update wesnoth
Download the latest version from the home page. Install it just like you installed the last one. If you want more details you have to provide more info.brobsch wrote:next question

Which is exactly what you shouldn't do as it leads to all sorts of problems. It's not a matter of installation. It will install over an old version just fine, but it can lead to problems when running. For instance if files are removed in the new version are still there because the old version provided them and stuff like old config files can then end up being read by the new version which obviously don't work very well. This is the main cause of all the "Error while loading configuration files" problems people are getting.toms wrote:At my computer the old version always gets overwritten.freim wrote:... and remember to remove the old version first if you install in the same location or you will get all sorts of errors/crashes.
Nice, I was just combing the forums in the hopes that I would find the answer to my question which was: If I install a new version or the "test-unstable" version of the game do I need to uninstall the older version. I found the anwer here which was "YES". I don't want any problems so I'm gonna go uninstall the older version I had. I'm downloading the 1.17 version now because I've seen a few posts about the changes, specifically the new music and I really want to check it out. I've enjoyed playing Wesnoth now and then when I get a chance. I'm a big fan of Turn based games. I do not like RTS games at all so ever since I found Wesnoth I've been thrilled. Thanks to everyone involved with this project. I know you created the game for yourselves but in the process you have made another gamer (Me) very happy. Thanks everyone.

Installing two different versions on top of each other in the same directory can cause OOS in MP or config errors at startup. Don't do it!Star Gazer wrote:Is this problem a Windows/Linux problem? - I use Mac OSX and have always just installed the new version.
I don't seem to have had any problems at all, despite having installed versions going back to 0.8.1 on the same drive...
Either:
* Uninstall the old version first
Or:
* Install the new version to a different directory.

I have to say that I have had no noticeable problems, except with UtBS, which seemed to have difficulty finding its maps, but then I've never played MultiPlayer mode, so some of those problems I wouldn't have encountered.
But, thanks, freim, your advice has been duly noted, and I will relegate all the old versions to my back-up machine, and reinstall from fresh.

The Mac-Binary is a little different then if you install with linux/windows. The mac binary is one pseudo-file with all the content. If you overwrite the oild installation there is no "rest" of it left. Only your Userdatadir somwhere in library stays (what is intentional). So this is not a real mac prob beside if you compile it yourself. Then you do have the same problems. But as long as you use the binary provided on the wesite you *should* have no problem.
