MP Chat

Post by jb »

The idea is simple. In multiplayer games, having the ability to chat to individual users in private. Similar to the "allies only" chat, but being able to send messages to any player on any team.

This would be especially useful in 4 (or more) player FFA games. Sometimes 2 players need to communicate privatlly.

It's a simple idea that could add a layer of "diplomacy" strategy among players.

hhhmmmm.....personally, im not a big fan of deceptive diplomacy.
It would add a level of treachery that might make new players frustrated if they discover an awesome game.....but then have the experience ruined by "secret teammates"...............................................................................
but thats just a preference...

It could be useful to send tells to other players currently in another game, also. You know, like nearly every other game with multiplayer support.

Well, you're intentions don't have to be evil.

If one player is off to a commanding lead, you might want to advise a new player so he can save himself.

It's just a tool, how you use it is up to you.

FFA pm's are evil.
I actually like the open chat in ffa. You can still make alliances, but no secret ones.

Indeed, knife may be very useful, but you can kill somebody with it.
I don't think depending on human's goodness in such things is good idea, especially when these humans are anonymous.

Perhaps a team-chat then? So you can discuss tactics with the rest of your team.

the /msg command has been implemented in SVN IIRC,

it's restricted to prevent observers from speaking secretly to players though

I've never really seen wesnoth as a diplomacy/trechary kinda game. Such tactics would be unfair, unbalanced and no fun for either side. This isn't civilization where that is a part of the game mechanics. Your on the side that you are on. That being said I do see plenty of reasonable uses for a whisper or tell command.

Personally id like to have this. I always find it strange when people say "Wesnoth is a strategy, not a diplomacy game", and i hear that suprisingly lot. Another phrase like that is "i hate it when two poor players make a pact and attack the good one". These make me usually think that the people who say those things arent exactly the sharpest things in the ward drobe. Thats of course my opinion and the situation (and the person who said it)in which its said affects my opinion a lot.

In strategy games, there are no people who are kniving peoples back, there are just people who are turning their backs to people.

That being said, im not sure if the change would be good for the game, really. Perhaps you should make the game always tell other players when someone sends a message privately, so you know they are talking (if it isnt allychat). Even so, id hate to have the feature on in a game where there is no time limit for a turn. In the first few turns the talking might take long if everyone wanted to talk with everyone. Some people already take long to do their turns and i dont want to see a feature that might make their turns longer.

And it might make the ffas harder for new people, since they dont know people. People are always more willing to talk with someone they know.
