Silver Mage Portrait

Post by Eternal »

Hello... And straight to the point:

I drew this Silver Mage portrait and now I ask whether it's good or not. Is it?
What should I improve? Or does it hurt your eyes to look at it? This is my first one, so be rough! :)
It was first hand drawn and everything else has been done with GIMP.
I wish I had more time in my hands.

Arrgh, my eyes, my eyes :P

just kidding

its a great start, however I think that it will need a bit more detail and texturing in places, partially because the stick currently looks out of place as the only textured bit, but mostly because we like to have our portraits at the highest standerd possible, so if you can improve it (while remaining within wesnoth's style) then do. :D

keep it up, and I look forward to seeing a version of this in game.

Maybe try to improve somehow the light above the staff.
Maybe you don't need the light effect behind (which looks like a kind of gradient).

That's quite good, but the jewel on his staff does look a lot more cartoony than the rest of the picture.

He seems to have a sinister smile, too. Don't you think that expression is better suited to the Necromancer?

Aye, that's one good Necromancer portrait. :D

Looks awesome to me. Although I do see some "jaggies" on his staff crystal. You need to anti-alias it and possibly apply a light blur as well.

I agree to all points mentioned above. Good work. However here is a little suggestion: I don't like his current facial impression, how about something like this?? (added a little beard makes him look a bit wiser) ;)

Textured it's robes a bit, tweaked the gemand the bling bling behind it. Now he also takes teleporting more seriously.

More tweaks coming up tomorrow.
And I'd say no beard. Beard's are for those who use arcane magic. Silver mage shaves. :D
I wish I had more time in my hands.

WOW! I really like it. IMHO though maybe his arm shouldn't be as far away from his body. He looks to me like he's inspecting the staff rather than weilding it. Just my opinion though.

Very good start!

Another artist who used their first post to add content. This game really rubs people the right away, doesn't it.

One point and one question from me.

He doesn't need a beard, but I think XJapan's face(minus beard) looks...
Well let's just say it no longer looks like he went 3 rounds with a shadow priest.

And the question... are you planning on doing the female version as well? Because I bet she'll look really hot, considering how awesome this guy looks.

Agreed. I think the face needs work. Otherwise, great job!

The face could use some minor tweaking, but isn't bad. The thing that bugs me is the way the robe hangs across his chest. Why the big S-shaped curve right across the chest? Why would the cloth stick there? It just seems odd. But then I have to admit that folds in hanging cloth is one area I constantly struggle with in my own drawing, so maybe I'm just hypersensitive about the issue.

Overall, I think this is one of the best first-submissions I've seen it a while. Keep up the good work, and don't let the nit-picking get you down! :)

I think it looks awesome AND I like the face. Some of the other artists have experience with adding texture; maybe you could hand it off for fabric texturing. We are in desperate need of mage portraits (perhaps not as desperate as for elves, but...).
Hope springs eternal.

Personally, I liked the original face and the glow effect. His face looked introspective and a little rebellious at the same time. Those other mages just don't understand how cool he is. :)

Yup, that face expression gave him a bit of personality.
