I'm curious as to how you came to this conclusion, is there anything wrong with the hosting provided by sourceforge?
Wesnoth is a simple, low-tech game. People who play such games are less likely to have high-speed connections. Such people might not be inclined to have to download for ~4 hours straight every time there is a new SVP. While I've noticed some issues with trying to resume downloads taken from the sourceforge hosting, Bittorrent wouldn't have that issue.

Does bittorrent have a speed advantage or is it just about resumability/ability to work in the background? I understand that you can receive parts of the download from many different peers, but if your dialup connection is the slow part of the process I don't fully get if bittorrent is faster somehow. I'm only asking FMI.
Hope springs eternal.

Easier resumability and verification of the download is the only thing i can see. Not sure if that warrants the trouble of setting torrents up, but if someone wants to do it no one's stopping him.

Bittorrent is supposed to be faster. I've noticed a small speed difference in (very crappy) dial-up. The difference may be virtual but who knows.

I actually run a wesnoth torrent on my open source torrent tracker, and it's fairly well distributed.

I link to it on the download page on the wiki, but obviously it isn't official - unless anyone on the distribution team wants to co-ordinate a BfW torrent?

BitTorrent can offer some speed increases because of the extra number of connections maintained, but too many connections can also slow down speeds.
