Faction idea: Feel free to say 'we have to many factions!'
but after all, this IS brainstorming....
A faction based on tribes in Africa?
The high hitpoints but negative resistances represent the difficulty they have in healing, so villages would not be effective in protecting these units.
theres a tribal fighter tree, a tiger rider tree, and another one I haven't thought of yet.
favorite terrain: sand, forest, grass
The basic unit might be:
Tribal fighter
neutral
move 6
5-5 Blade
cost 14
hp 50
defences 70 in difficult terrain, 40 in swamps/water, 60 in plains.
resistances: -30% for all except cold, fire, holy and blade.
and the tiger guy can have
lawful
movement 9,
hp 55,
16-1 impact charge headbutt
4-5 blade
cost 26
similiar resistances and defenses
Just thought of the third unit:
Tribal Hunter
neutral
cost 14
move 6
hp 40
skirmisher
8-2 pierce javalin
8-2 pierce spear firststrike
skirmisher
similiar resistances and defenses
Oh and I got the fourth one
Tribal Shaman
neutral
heals
cost 18
move 5
hp 36
5-2 staff impact
1-15 magical, impact, sandstorm,ranged
and with similiar defences and resistances.
Now, you can tie me to a log and burn me like a witch!

And are you going for realism? Tiger rider line? And why would they be vulnerable to impact and pierce but not blade?

You sure that's not 15-1? With magical on it, that'd be 10-11 damage almost every single time, with that many attacks.

WE already have the Northeners for that. They don't wear that much armor, they ride wolves and they have shamans

I endorse Orcish sprite rehashing to make it feel more tribal.
If you want a little cameo of desert tribes for something, then go with it. Remember hunters also used poison in their arrows.

...dunno, I was thinking they know how to parry... oh well.
This 'faction' was inspired by reality, but it isnt completely accurate
Maybe make the shaman 1-10, but even the Mage goes 6-3, thats 12 damage almost every time

Fact: Faction ideas are worth diddly unless graphics get made.
For example, I have in my head ideas for Incan styled units, mongol styled units, arab styled units, barbarians, and all sorts of magical creatures like dryads and selkies.
All of this came to mind in about 10 seconds, stats could follow in a few minutes, and wouldn't be especially worth discussing, since truth shown by gameplay would heavily revise them anyways.
What we need are graphics, and lots of them. This unfortunately means a lot of practice - I myself have thrown out tons of work. If you make good graphics for a faction idea, I can say without doubt that 1] Someone will use them, and 2] they have a decent chance of going in mainline.

I believe the volcanic rock you are talking about is obsidian, a volcanic glass highly prized by many stone tool using societies because it's hard, but can be worked to create tools and weapons and holds a sharp edge. If so, sorry to disapoint but its black not red.

As for the picture, yeah - that's a start. Just compare it to an existing one, copy parts in, and change them.

I cant see a faction like this working.... the african tribes had no real armies, and a tribe is out gunned, outclassed, AND outnumbered, by a few companies of troops.
if you do this, (and you have the images) tey will ned something unique, that makes them effective. I'm talking about abilities here. all of them would be able to skirmish for example.
also NONE of the tribes EVER had swords because to this day, they lack the technological ability to forge one.
in other words: lots of spears, bows and thrown rocks for this faction.
also give the high defence, because I now know from experience that an unamored man with nothing but his weapon dodges insanely well.
give the units things like cures early on for example.
or you can just make it nomal and capable of doing normal damage, and people will probably not care.
(why do i remeber so much about africans of all people. no offense to them, just look at it from my view.
you need to try checking a bit more before saying something like that.
right now there is two historical factions that people are working on, (not in the game, but as a downloadable era) and they have gotten quite far, following history pretty closely. in fact, the Lavinians are almost entirely based on history.
and if you don't follow 'the historic crap' your game or faction, or whatever ends up so unrealistic that no one can understand it, or why you have guys with knives easily penetrating plate mail.
at times, I find the fact that wesnoth is a friendly site to be a pain.
