Post by hardmard »

This advertisement is targeting all Poles wanting to develop the Official Polish Wesnoth website (http://www.wesnoth.pl). :D The site engine is up and running, so we are currently seeking people, who would contribute to the building of content - mainly in Polish.

All kind of development is welcome, especially:
- strategy & tactics section dev.
- publishing news
- maps section dev.
- Polish Wesnoth League [ladder play] management
- doing translations of the best guides / docs about Wesnoth

If You speak Polish and are willing to participate in this project, just send me a message here at the forum or register directly on the PL Wesnoth page (http://www.wesnoth.pl).

While this is kind of interesting, why would someone want to develop a whole alternate universe? Why not just use the existing wiki infrastructure and post content there?

Alternate universe :)

Well, there're many approaches towards the same thing. Let's just look at any big title in the games world - there are official sites, fan sites, ladders, tourneys, thousands of clan pages for most popular multiplayer games not to mention private homepages with interesting content connected to the game. We'd all like to see Wesnoth as a big thing and that's the idea behind the Official Polish Wesnoth website.

Another thing is to make translations of resources across the web - that'd attract many young people from Poland to the game.

Last but not least, such a site can host local events such as tourneys, surveys and its users can focus on writing tactics guides, exchanging ideas and not on the development of the core game. It's the players who make the games popular :)

How do you localize a wiki? Do you just copy it over to a new site and translate it?

Well, this will do, if one doesn't know English well enough. However, in the case of Wesnoth, we don't want only to translate every wiki resource, but to combine the most valuable of them and add our own ideas.

That's funny - I begin to get the impression some do dislike the idea :o

The issue is not disliking the idea, just wondering: the Polish translation of the game is at 44.35%, why would a whole bunch of translators suddenly appear to translate the wiki, which has much more text than the game? And if they did appear, why not encourage them to help to finish the translation of the game?

I agree - this is a real problem, but the low rate of translation is mainly due to the poor management. I've sent a message to the manager half a year ago asking whether they could use my help with the translation and how're the things going and still got no reply.

But again this is the official side[official translators] - as I've mentioned in the previous posts - it's the players who make the game popular and I'd like to give them a place to create and exchange.

That's probably because the maintainer has changed in the spring, I'm the new one. We've done quite some work since that time. If you want to contact me, you can find my email in wiki or visit us on #wesnoth-pl on FreeNode network.

As for the site - IMO the current layout doesn't look very good, that's the first thing I'd change if I wanted to attract more people... :-)

The site is fine for a start.

I think it's a good thing to have "local community centers" - it's easier to build teams and consult strategies using your local language ;).
