Round time limit for multiplayer games!

Post by crion »

It would be a great addition to add a round time limit for any type of multiplayer-game. I like the way it is handled in freeciv. The amount of time per round should be set on start of the game. That would be great to stop people doing twenty other things while playing Wesnoth, what sometimes leads to people forgetting that they are playing Wesnoth *grmpfl*

I don't think that anyone ever forgets that they're playing wesnoth, rather, I think the real world impinges in unavoidable ways. And I think the point here is that adding a time limit would not stop those people from having to attend to whatever is going on in the real world, rather it would make more problems for them.

The fact that someone can be in the middle of a long game of wesnoth, have a minor crisis happen in their real life and take ten minutes off to deal with it is a fundamental and very treasured feature of the game, to me. I don't view it as the lack of something, I view it as a very important design consideration.

Sometimes less is more - I'd prefer not to have Clippy™ the animated stapler in any MS Office alternatives. I think that time limits would be a very damaging feature to add to the game. Just my 2¢.

The point is - no one forgets that they're in the middle of a game of wesnoth. People have problems they have to deal with, though, and adding another time stressor would just be mean.

Sorry, I don't have four hours for a small Wesnoth-map that just takes four hours because of some slowpokes. And I don't want that time-limit to be mandatory, but I'd like it to be added as an option.
If in a multiplayer-game somebody gets a big real-life problem that leads to a delay of the game, then you can just save that game and continue if all problems are solved.
Maybe I just played my multiplayer-games with the wrong people and have made bad experiences, don't know...

I started working towards adding this feature by at least adding a real world clock as an option to the themes (can be seen in dfool theme). I would eventually like to make an optional turn-limit clock for multiplayer, but it most definitely is a post 1.0 feature. Just as in chess, having time-limits changes the nature of the game. Sometimes, you do want to guarantee that a game will not take more than ~1hour (2 players 30 moves, 1 min max per move.) Still, the actual handling of it could be a bit tricky in the code. It is likely I will not get around to programming it until such time as I get internet access from my apartment otherwise testing it would be a real pain. I may get access in the next month or so but I doubt that I would get back to coding up such an option until after the feature freeze is lifted.

Summary: Been suggested before. We think it's a good idea. Hope to add eventually.

See https://savannah.nongnu.org/bugs/index. ... em_id=8670 for the feature request, from April 2004.

If you have any problems with game durring play, you shouldn't be playing in the first play. The whole point of sitting down and playing is being able to play it without interuption. It should be an option for time limit or not.

Besides if the time limit is set to 1min per player and there are 4-6 players you have about 5 minutes between your turns. Which is fair enough to deal with most everyday problems while playing.

Quite obviously wrong, considering the interruption of many minutes after every time you end your turn!
