Well a part is but the naginata weren't used only by females and the assasins who helded the shurikens were the ninja (japanese type of assasin) and the mangas about historic stories about samurais I think i've read them all. They've got quite a good information but some parts aren't really true.
sorry about the naginatas I mixed this up with classical spear-weapons.
Where do I get my informations?
1) I practiced martial arts for ca. 10 years now
2) I read the classical books: romance of the three kingdoms, Sun Tzu: The art of war, Myamoto Musashi: Book of the five rings
3) I love Akira Kurosawa Movies.
4) The manga I have mentioned; lone wolve∪ was written by a japanese professor of art and drawed by a japanese artists. Its origin must be in 70ies or 80ies of the last century. It has a very good appendix about historical facts in every volume. I will try to look up the original japanese name.
5) I too know the ninjas. Where is the difference between assasins and ninjas?
6) I am always willing to learn and if you as a half-japanese know it better plz tell me
@Kafka: Great work so far, but I think the balancing might be a little bit difficult. Try to make your lvl1-tier units not to overpowered.

2) Good unformations searching
3) They are great aren't they?
4) Better you find the japanese name 'cause I dind't heard of those names.
5) Assasins had an identity but ninjas didn't and they couldn't be searched 'cause they didn't had any identity. There is more but I'll tell you by "p.m."
6) I'll tell you by "p.m."
Seems like you're a fan of japan.

Sorry for my mix up. there I've reedited. How is it then?torangan wrote:I was refering to Kengo.gif since that one has a naginata in it's description but looking at the picture I'd say it's a katana held in a strange position. Maybe it's supposed to show something else, I'm just describing how it looks to me. Obviously in the picture two positions below the person is really holding a naginata. So maybe it's just the the descriptions ought to be switched?Seiryu wrote:Sorry but my samurai with naginata isn't holding a katana.

Thanks for all the help so far everyone, the artwork i have should be done by monday. As for the units, I still think they might be overpowered a little, but i'm going to try to find somebody to evelop them as is. Then they can be tested for balancing. I have the level 3s made too now.
It's not about winning or losing, it's about how many you can take out before you go down!
I belive we should wait onl a few games of testing vs every faction currently in existence before to many changes are ruled. It will come out quickly how balanced or unbalnced things are then, and may the Far east become a full faction swiftly and with little trouble!
May the drakes bloody kill you all.
That's a lot of artwork to get done. I feel bad that you're paying someone to make it - but I can sympathize with the reasoning behind doing so.Kafka wrote:Thanks for all the help so far everyone, the artwork i have should be done by monday. Because you're paying for it, I really do hope that the graphics are good enough for official use, if you choose to release them under the GPL. Be sure he's seen our existing graphics already.
I haven't read any of the stats, but in general, I can say that additional cultures of humans would be heartily welcomed by me, insofar as they have good enough graphics. It would make for a hell of a lot less one-dimensional fantasy world.

Side note: Shuriken were largely used as a mere annoyance weapon, just like throwing knives. They could be lethal, just like a small rock, but they were not reliably so. A sword is reliably lethal. The basic idea is that there are only a few places you can hit someone with a shuriken and kill them (ex: the jugular), and even then it takes time.
The primary purpose is to hurt someone enough to severely impair their ability to fight. Most grunt soldiers/guards are not used to being, or occasionally have never been badly wounded, and even those who have will still flinch for a second or two. A common reaction would be to grab at the thing and pull it out of your skin. That buys the user time to make a generally fatal sword slash - all you need is that split second.
Even if that fails, you might have done something rough enough to the guy to impair him for longer than a second - if you get lucky and hit him in the head, he'll get blood in his eyes, and you might get really lucky and hit him in the eye.
A shuriken *would* be useful as a wesnoth weapon, because we already treat throwing knifes as general combat weapons. WINR

Thus marking the 5 jazillionth time that someone came here, talked about how they were going to do something big and cool, and ... never quite got it done.
There's nothing inherently bad about that, but there's also nothing good. With stuff like this, I just wish people would get something real done. Something we can actually use.
It sure would be cool if they'd finish this...
Now that is rude. For your information he has been. He had trouble getting hold of the friend he was paying so the artist never got the info till around monday. Also the artist is working on a online game elsewhere so there merely a tad late. Merely have some patience man.
May the drakes bloody kill you all.
sorry about not having it done by monday, but my artist is working on several projects. I have no further controll in the matter. However, the prelimarary sketches for the units are done, as well as all of the level 1 sprites. Another note, I have the level 3s done, but i'm not posting them here. I might have further tweaks, but right now i'm waiting on the artwork.

Wow and lets have a break now until it finishes. Well i think we will be already dead.Kafka wrote:sorry about not having it done by monday, but my artist is working on several projects. Hmm... I noticed that with your second level units, there were two that had an alternate melee attack with first strike that was weaker than the other - the Tainted Initiate and the Samurai Officer. I suppose it's in order to present an interesting choice when attacking, but first strike is only useful on the defense. While when the unit gets attacked, the AI would choose, not the player (the attack with the most damage, I think). So I don't think that would work very well.
So how about giving the Tainted Initiate a Flying Kick attack instead of punch? Makes more sense anyway, since he already has a sword, so his hands are occupied, but his feet are not. And it'd give him the choice between charge, when the circumstances are favorable, and his sword, when they aren't.
I'm not sure what to change about the Samurai Officer. Maybe drop the second attack, and give the main one a point more damage or so.
I like the faction idea a lot, by the way!

Not only is it unlikely that some random person is going to be skilled enough to do the job, but it's equally unlikely that they will have the determination to see the job through. We've had dozens of people start work on things and fail to finish them. Hell, I'm starting to wonder if Mr. Lutes is going to finish what he started (though I dearly hope he does, and still lend credence to that).
What I said is easily much less rude than promising to make something, and breaking that promise. Kafka has broken a promise already, but I don't care. Just get something done.
The very least that this person could do is post something of the art up, because the utter lack of that has my BS detectors lighting up like a christmas tree. I hope he is serious, and I hope he really does have something done, but I will believe it only when I see it, and you should be ashamed of your own naiveté for not sharing that outlook.
