Roman legion type faction

I am really in support of a Roman-esque faction or side-faction. They have alot of stuff to work with from history, and could definately make some unique units and strategy with them.
I also love Roman history, so Im biased. I thought I read some where that there were going to be no big new changes though untill 1.0? Gives alot of time to work on it.
Seems there are a few factions to choose from on which people want implimented the most and whats the easiest to do..
Trolls
Romans
Desert People
Solo Bandits
I'd prefer the Romans over all of that.
I also love Roman history, so Im biased. I thought I read some where that there were going to be no big new changes though untill 1.0? Gives alot of time to work on it.

Only one person I've seen wants trolls implemented as their own faction. They're fine as they are, allied with orcs.
There has been a lot of support for removing the criminals from the knalgans. I think that should be done, and the Marauders, once their graphics are up to par, should be substituted. I'm not sure how many people want the criminals as their own faction, though.
Desert People, Marauders, and Romans, in that order, are the most interesting factions suggested, IMHO.

I think it would be VERY cool to me since we obviously arent trying to directly copy the romans to have a Roman/Desert-ish culture. Now you have a use for the desert tile, and have an easier and IMO more original direction to go. I wouldn't put it in front of the marauders though since they are far further in development. Like I said, Im biased.

Good afternoon!
This is funny. I had once done a few units for a roman style faction, then lost interest. I had gone in slightly different directions than you. I remember I had:
legionarus -> decurio -> centurio
-> optio -> primipilus
The legionarius was a bit different from what you're thinking. He did 5-2 (blade) in melee and 5-2 (pierce) in range, but he had steadfast because of the large shield. The decurio line had leadership and the optio line was stronger.
I know I also made a 'equites' line which was fast, had powerful charge attack but was very light and split between a line which became even faster and one which did a little bit less damage but was tougher (i.e. heavy and light cavalry).
I also had a 'velites' line which was light infantry with more range and less melee and was working on a 'war machine' line when I lost interest.
Ultimately, stats aren't hard to do. I've found one of the best ways to balance custom unit is through mp versus the computer. The real problem is graphics, and I wish I could help, but...

B how are people playing to "make it up"to the knalgans as loosing criminals would be huge..

to B, as I said, give them the marauders. They'd be very similar to the criminals, but be better in water and worse on hills+mountains. I think marauders are more in character with the dwarves, anyway. Vikings + dwarves makes more sense than Criminals + dwarves.

unsung: it's a nice enough idea, but the implementation is far more important than the idea.
Sure, go ahead and implement it. You don't need my go-ahead. Free software and all that.
But turin is right, there's no guarantee it will make it into any 'official' version -- and that's the same of any idea, no matter how good or bad. It would be incredibly foolhardy of the developers to promise to include any contribution in the game when the contribution is only at the 'ideas' stage.
A 'Roman legion' type faction possibly with campaign and mp era could be great, or it could be awful. It depends on the quality of unit stats, balancing, graphics, campaign design and storyline, etc that goes into it.
If you want to do it, and you think you can do a good job of it, then go for it. Don't even bother asking whether people like the idea, and certainly don't go asking for 'permission'.
