On another topic, are the trolls so intellectually impaired in Wesnoth?. I mean, THAT intellectually impaired?.
I think they could get away with throwing spears, with GREAT force.

Unless you have at least some idea of what you're doing when you throw a javelin (as in, are holding the javelin correctly, in the right place, etc), it will just flop onto the ground no matter how hard you throw it. I don't think trolls have the coordination to do that.
And yes, they ARE that intellectually impaired.

So they are THAT intallectually impaired, hell, that is just harsh. If Wesnoth had a Darwin, he would be producing the equivalent of vacuum energy RIGHT NOW.

Well, look, they're barely even sentient beings. Think of an ape - could an ape wield a javelin? I doubt it. But he is still smarter than, say, a dog.

It's all fun and games until someone loses a lawsuit. Oh, and by the way, sending me private messages won't work. :/ If you must contact me, there's an e-mail address listed on the website in my profile.
The Trolls that took part in the Battle of Pelennor Fields in RotK were almost a completely difference race from the cave and mountain trolls in the Hobbit and FotR, albeit of Troll stock. They were bred a lot like the Uruk-hai, except that it was Sauron, not Saruman, who bred these Trolls (which are referred to in the appendices as Olog-hai), and although shown in the movie as the shock troops that poured through the breach in the gates of Minas Tirith, they weren't actually mentioned in the book itself - except in the appendices. Yes, they were intelligent to a degree, certainly more intelligent than your average Troll, but this was due to them being under the constant, direct will of Sauron himself, which is also what kept them from turning to stone in sunlight. Oh, and there's no reference of them actually talking, short of grunts. Even in the movie, don't tell me you can make that babble out?
Anyway, this being Wesnoth, I don't know. They'd need some kind of controlling force, I'd imagine. But would that be an Orc or...?

Actually, Wesnoth trolls are quite smart, look here.Goatfoam wrote:Anyway, this being Wesnoth, I don't know.

Apart from all the realism arguments, consider this: do you really want another ALL-GREEN[1] faction out there

[1] okay, the Mages and Merman aren't green, but, hey, most other units in that other faction are

EDIT: okay, seeing scott's post I'd say if they threw flamingoes and rode pink elephants, it'd be alright.
Try some Multiplayer Scenarios / Campaigns
A freking neanderthal could make a spear and considering they have warriors troll smust be at least that smart.tomsik wrote:they have to make spears before, i dont think trolls are so intellingentCuyo Quiz wrote:I think they could get away with throwing spears, with GREAT force.
oh and goat foam trools in lotr CAN talk and use weapons. read the hobbit.
Oh no look out its a ray gun.
You should move to avoid the rays
the rays are coming out of the gun
if you are hit by the rays
you will be shot by the rays
the rays are fast so you should be fast to
can you win against the fast rays from the gun?

Spears aren't exactly that difficult to make (a proper javelin, however, would likely require some basic understanding of physics), get long rigid stick, get pointy rock, use sinew to attach rock to stick.
If the Troll Rocklobber can make a leather(?) sling that's well, then I'm sure Trolls could develop spears.
This is, however, based on the assumption that trolls are self-sufficient. Where does the Troll Warrior get his plate mail and (from the looks of it) very well crafted maul? If it's made by Trolls then obviously they could make spears (and javelins as well), but if it's supplied by some other species then there's a whole other problem right there. Or maybe they're like the vikings and adapt the technologies of defeated enemies.

The answer to this idea and many similiar ones is that we can have it if someone makes it.
The idea of a troll campaign and faction sounds rather boring to me, just hearing it. But if someone decides to write a troll campaign and can make it interesting, then things could change. If they could create an interesting set of units, culture, and storyline for the trolls, and make a good quality campaign, along with an accompanying mp era that includes a troll faction, then great.
Don't bother asking for permission or polling the forum, if you think you can do a good, interesting job of such a campaign, then go for it.

About bows: Even if the troll could make the bow, string it, and figure out how to fire it, it'd probably just prefer to use it as a club. Which works great until you break the bow.
And bows take a while to make unless you've got a bandsaw. And somehow, I think the troll would be impatient, and just end up using the tree as a club. Or pink flamingos.
I might be able to see a troll using a wooden morning star though.
