Fix the Halbardier?

Post by Invisible Philosopher »

13-4 first strike. Very powerful. More than the Royal Guard, the other 3rd level Spearman upgrade[*] (12-4, and no first strike). More powerful than the Orcish Warlord (13-4, but no first strike, the most powerful normal melee unit other than the Halbardier). AND, it's worse, in a way, than its downgrade, 14-2 first strike. It does less damage on each strike, which is especially important for first strike. I'd expect it would do more, not less, damage per strike (and not double its number of attacks). Also, it seems like too many powerful fighters are almost the same, having 4 melee attacks. I think the Halbardier's pierce attack should be 15-3 or 16-3. Those would do less total damage than it does currently, have more continuity with the Pikeman, and make a more unique unit.

[*] It does take a little bit less XP to get a Royal Guard than a Halbardier.

P.S.: This thread from a while ago tried to fix the Pikeman and Halbardier. The Pikeman was fixed, and the proposal for the Halbardier was reasonable (about the same as what I'm suggesting), but whoever implemented it made the Halbardier a powerhouse unit instead.

On another note regarding the the Halbardier, The second "a" should be an "e".

We're currently planning changes to all of the spearman improvements, and this will include making the Halbardier less powerful.

Your argument makes sense. The power of first strike does depend on the power of the first attack, not the number of attacks. 15-3 or 16-3, seems like a better pierce attack.
