My take on the Khaliphate

Post by ohidar »

Er.. this isn't such a good idea, David & crew..
I have been playing Wesnoth since 1.2 and I sincerely and honestly think that we should rename the Khaliphate to something along the lines of "Kumai" or "Jumai" or whatever.
This is going to prevent many players from coming- those who have been phazed by 9-11, Islam, Christians, maybe even Buddhist, Hindu or-GASP- Shinto.
The reason I bolded, italicized, underlined and -GASP-ed Shinto is because that's the main religion of Japan. Japan has smart, creative minds. We need more of those.
So yeah, I pretty much think that the Khaliphate are going to screw up our playerbase though I personally don't mind them (Christian).

Um, shouldn't you have put this in the khaliphite feedback thread? Anyway, I don't think any of the developers care.

But hey, I might be wrong.

Other people have made threads about this.

I am really not sure why you think any of those religions would be offended by the inclusion of the Khalifate. Also it would please me if you do not use national stereotypes, positive or negative ones (positive such as Japan having smart creative minds [few thriving cultures don't produce their share of these], or negative such as any of those being so easily offended as to be offended by the inclusion of a desert/steppe faction).

There have also been people saying that the undead faction should be removed for religious reasons. These have all (or almost all) been locked.

Fore example: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?t=19676

Yeah, this has come up before, and the general answer (before it got locked) was mostly along the lines of "Get over it".

Delfaldor attempts to kidnap the princes of Wesnoth (he says they were killed before he got there, but do you really believe a kiddie snatcher?), and when he can't steals the next kid he finds instead. He then manipulates this child, lying to him his entire life that he's the rightful heir to the crown, ruining any chance the boy has of a normal life - raised in isolation from his entire species! - then leads a successful attack against the government of the time, imposing his own choice of ruler by force.

Kiddy snatching, despotic anti-democratic terrorist, that's what he is.

You can be offended by anything if only you're willing to put the effort in.

Yeah I saw all that and about the undead, but well, that's not as bad as apparently being biased toward one religion to the new guys. And remember, I said I don't care myself.
Oh yeah and I should but I didn't see it. Repost go!

Yes, me for example. I've tried to bring valid issues in a good way so that they can be discussed. But it got locked.
Khalifate Unit Naming: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=33893
Khalifate and Religion: http://forums.wesnoth.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=33904

imho there was never a satisfying answer to the mentioned issues, even though there seems to be a large userbase sharing the mentioned concerns (because there are good reasons to do so, which I mentioned in the threads). The topics got locked because of some stupid comments - that's it.
The general line is: Don't even think I'm going to listen to you, cause I am the one making the game. Well it's a way how you can do your things. I'm accepting that (by ignoring the game at the moment).
I'm really wondering how the developing style of the team changed so much. Is it that there are also big changes in the active team? Just wondering.

A Caliphate is so called because it is ruled by a Caliph - "the political leader of the Muslim world, successor of Muhammad's political authority, not religious or spiritual." But the Wesnoth version is spelt 'Khalifate', and I guess that means it's ruled by a Khalif - "the political leader of the Mhuzlim world", perhaps. Still too close to the real-world version for you? Do you also suggest that Wesnoth should no longer be called a monarchy?

Oh look. There's the stupid comment now.

Given that the exact original post did end up going into the general Khalifate feedback thread, I see no reason to keep this thread open.
