Weapons are painful. :| But I don't want to go with the foreshortened sword in the sprite's right hand, because that would definitely make it look like a lieutentant rip-off... but a sabre doesn't seem to fit the rest of the unit...

The armor looks a bit more heavy and brutal than most sprites and sabre looks funny indeed, maybe a 2handed sword, but 2handed axe might balance it out better.

So, in my spare time I've been fiddling with this sprite, and I've come up with some fixes to the legs and shading. Namely, the pose has been adjusted slightly, the booties have been replaced by more realistic armored footgear, and the entire sprite has been brightened up (creeping shinierism FTW) to match the new loyalist sprites better.

Shininess isn't always an improvement and I feel that you've lost a lot of the unit's three dimensionality in reshading.

:hmm: Hmm, that's a valid point. Looking at it again, the shininess does make it seem significantly flatter.

But it was fun to fool around with it, anyway. :P

I'm glad you posted something; this thread had almost reached the second page.

On topic: The feet are definitely a great improvement. :D

Had a chance to stop in, and wow! You've improved so much already! I love the way that you handle advice and critiques, and it's obvious that you are learning a lot faster because of it. Keep up the good work my friend!
I'm finally admitting that this will be a very long (if not permanent) Wesbreak. Thank y'all for the great times, and may Wesnoth rise to become one of the most popular games on the planet.

Here's something I recently did for Frogatto, which I thought some of you here might enjoy seeing. Note that this animation is NOT licensed under the GPL, and that all rights to this animation are held by the Frogatto project.

Each pebble is certainly good enough, but I think you could bear to show an overall form better. The way in which you maintain highlight specks on each pebble make him seem less like he's a three-dimensional character and more like he's a flat mosaic on a wall made with pebbles. The left claw that overlaps with the leg also could use some accentuation; I recommend making the leg itself less eye-grabbing to make the claw stand out more.

 Ugh, you're so right. Looking at it now, I just shake my head. Tunnel vision ftw.

Working on a fix, this should hopefully correct things.

Ah, much better! The occasional larger chunks are a great improvement.

...Aaaand completion. I'll be using the palette on the sprite above for the actual challenge submission, but I like this experimental palette better.

Needs moar contrast in the overall shading. It's still suffering from a subtle lack of overall 3D form, especially in the shaping of the torso. The fact that all the plates in the middle are equally shaded across their whole radius also hinders it a bit.

Hmm, more contrast. I was actually thinking the same thing, but I was held back by the fact that stone is supposed to be fairly low-contrast. Perhaps just fixing the torso up some more might help... :|
