Re:Board Game..

Post by ryn »

I like the concept of simplifying the amount of units per faction, and the concept of map printouts.. perhaps there should be a standard size for these so they can be printed and put on a metal board (and then clipped on in some way or another, preferably with a magnet built in somehow) and a keep could be a magnetic piece. Figures could have small 1-5 counters next to them (5 types of units per faction, 5 of each in the game at a time) I have yet to decide what a figure would be like (I'm thinking of something comfortable enough to make at home without welding/brazing/soldering and definitely not using warhammer figures) probably hexagonal pieces smaller than a regular game hexagon with some sort of (once again) magnet clippable-printout of the unit, so that we can have units look the same on the actual and board versions. Each unit would also have a color tag of some sort (getting complex yet?) and we would have 1,5,and 10 counters for full hp. Resistance to damage could be easy (+/- 1/4 or 1/2 of total damage done, rounded down) and cards would of course also have numbers. I agree with scrapping poison and traits. Experience should definitely be measured in units killed, 1 xp per level per unit, and different units can have different amounts of xp to next level (mage would be different than for example elf fighter) This is hopefully the idea with least bookkeeping and most accurate rules. I hope I don't sound as though I'm the "leader" of this project - I'm just making a board version of my own (for personal use) and am stating how I will probably do it (unless someone comes with some good concepts to add that I like) I do hope, however, for there to be an official way of making a boardgame (possibly buying one) soon, possibly based on discussion in this forum..

PS: When I talk about clipping paper with magnets I mean using a paperclip (or any similar device) only magnetized over the top so that it remains firmly fixed in position over a piece of metal under the paper, and thus the paper shouldn't move. This is the most effective way of making paper stay in place in relation to another object without gluing, tell me if you have another idea :)

PARAGRAPHS!!

Add some whitespace, man, that huge block is difficult to read or quote.

I already wrote what I think is an even better resistance system. It's equivalent to units haveing resistances of {-100, -50, 0, 50, 100}. Yes, I'm suggesting immunities. Drakes to Fire, perhaps Skeletons to pierce or cold. (not both!)

The new RISK games have inf/arty/cav figurines, we could use something of the same type. Building a magnet into the bottom so they clip down and don't wobble is a nice idea.

The resistance system I wrote about is the same as yours, seeing that 1/2 =20%, 1/4=25%.... and yes, this is probably better than the original.. for a board game anyway.

I think there is another way to deal w/ damage resistance of blade/pierce weapons. Those resistance in Wesnoth are usually +20%/-20%. So for +20% we require a extra point of the dice to hit (e.g. 4 -> 5). Vice versa for the -20%.

For those w/ strong armors (like dwarfs), we give them more hitpoints instead. For steadfast, double hit points and double their healing rate.

has no one else told you that changing chance to hit is MUCH more powerfuyl and unbalancing than changing damage? :?

There could be two "sliders"on the unit card; one for hp and one for experience; So it's easily for people with short-term memory lack to remember what their unit stats are like;
Also it's easy to see how far a unit is done if the slider was acompanied by a color chart; the bottom ?% is red; and a small white/black line at where it's at full health (Units with drain would get a longer slider than their actual health as they could gain health from fighting)
And also you can easily keep track of experience on a unit; 3 kills would mean the slider up 3 bars; kill a level 3; 3 clicks more; until you reach the top if the experience slider and you got yourself a leveled unit :D !

that would be a hard type of card to place other cards onto.
Darkness called… But I was on the phone, so I missed him. I tried to *69 Darkness, but his machine picked up. I yelled "PICK UP THE PHONE, DARKNESS!", but he ignored me. Darkness must have been screening his calls.

Well ofcourse the sliders don't have to be fixed parts of the card; but once you have your units on the field you can lay down the cards; and put the sliders on them; but this would be an easier way to indicate how much health and experience a unit has anyway.

I prefer my solution, a whiteboard field to erase and write hp in. Kills can be marked by green tokens. 3 or 4 to level once. (5 for mages, I guess.)

So can we get this in production anytime next year?

I'm not even thinking of production, I was just making a metal version for me to play with.. I will post details on how I made it if anyone here has access to welding/brazing equipment, sheet metal, files, squaring shears, magnets, and paper. Assuming no one does, I guess I'll give people instruction on how to make it out of cardboard :D
