I haven't played this one in years, but wasn't he kicked out of mage school for inflicting disease on someone?
On a toad, specifically, IIRC.

Malin Keshar (ranting) wrote:Gods of Darkness, how did it come to this? My own sister determined on my death. Nothing has gone right since... since that day the fat toad Zephrin mocked my up-country accent and I lost my temper and cursed him with boils. “A life curse goes beyond a joke,” they said. “Poor judgment,” they said, and expelled me from the Academy.

Well, that can't be called a good doing, but is it right to call him evil only for that? I don't think so (maybe because some of my classmates were really annoying, so I understand Malin in this question  ). Maybe that was the beginning of his way into darkness.
So, I think he became really evil only when he started to attack other humans. Before that he was somehow in the middle. (Still, I'm not sure about that, because in life there are no people, who are completley good or completley evil, and it's hard to judge.)

Can we agree that Zephrin is not literally a toad? I suppose it's debatable what a "life curse" may be, but it sounds like Malin cursed Zephrin for life. Wouldn't that qualify as an "attack on other humans"? Isn't that considerably different from some of your classmates who were annoying?

I don't think it's that hard to judge if you use your judgment. We make mistakes constantly, but I believe most of us do try to do good. If we had the power to inflict a curse on someone who annoyed us, the average person would decide it's not worth it.

No toad. He just has boils...
Which IS quite awful, but not as life-threatening as being a toad.

I don't know how curses work there, but from Malin's words: "...and I lost my temper and cursed him ...", it seems like Malin did it immediatly, without thinking much about the result. And I don't believe there is no one in the magic school who can break a curse. So, I think Malin was not evil at that time, only really hot-tempered. And of couse he was not goot either, as I've already said.

And, by the way, when orcs attacked Parthyn, he used necromancy to save others, even knowing that it is forbidden and he may be punished. If not that, maybe I would accept that he was evil from the begining, but that deed, I think, was a good one.

...you and me both. I think they don't like "real" names in Wesnoth (Konrad?)
They renamed her Lady Jessene or something similar, the sardonic wit and red hair remains so I'm not complaining.
...apparenly we can't go with it or something.

I actually prefer Jessene over Jessica. It has more of a fantasy and outlandish feel to it, which is only fitting. What I don't understand that well, however, is why they made one of the main characters of Liberty a woman...

Anyhow, I think I'd need to say Thera and Morvin are my favorites too. Tallin has some distinct badassiness to him, especially if you take into account the evil branch of the campaign, but the white mages really deserve the top. Heroes of UtBS also had some very nice and distinct character in them, and what is there not to love about Jessene. There is yet to be written as hilarious and unique dialogues as those of Thera and Morvin, however.

And about them not taking part in future wars: I didn't get the impression they could cheat aging. Also, wasn't Northern Rebirth one of the last great wars for decades? And, from what I've gathered, the North lands really got their own place and prosperity, and are far away from Wesnoth and it's problems. And, futher more, they just propably got a life after helping save the land. Why would they bother with outland affairs, when obviously Knalga would still have problems of it's own to come, and the outlands never bothered to help them.

I'd still say they concentrated on their own lives afterwards, and died of old age by choice or fail in magicks eventually.
