Level 1 Young Gryphon

Post by Elvish_Hunter »

While not being an artist, I'm trying to do some artwork. In The Sojournings of Grog, I needed a Level 1 unmounted Gryphon, that I decided to call Young Gryphon. I imagine them covered with white and grey feathers, like some birds when young, so I copied the mainline Gryphon frames elsewhere, opened The Gimp, started picking colours from the Gryphon's head to create a palette, mixed some colours to create new ones, recoloured the sprites and this is the result:

For any UMC developer that is interested in using it, I'm attaching the frames:

Any opinion about this?

Seems a little large for a young gryphon. A better idea would be to study the base frame and animations, make a smaller gryphon, and then animate it using the same techniques that are used in the bigger one. It's a decent recolor, but that's all it is.

Is this intended to be a Level 1 of this main-line Gryphon, Image or could you just use this? If it is intended to be a level one that advances into the main-line gryphen, maybe you should consider using the main-line gryphen, then giving him armor or something as a level two

I'm finally admitting that this will be a very long (if not permanent) Wesbreak. Thank y'all for the great times, and may Wesnoth rise to become one of the most popular games on the planet.

I know. For now, what I can do is recolouring and frankensteining. I posted it just in case that someone needed it. Thanks :)

Yes, it is intended.

Excuse me for resurrecting this thread, but it's my thread after all, and I made some improvements. Tet kindly explained me how to scale units, so I followed his explanation and also Aura's suggestion:

I scaled it down and fixed all the strange pixels that this created and that I was able to notice. It took me a while, so this explains my delay in posting. Your opinion? How can I improve it?

As a smaller Gryphon it's great, but I don't really see the "younger" part too clearly.

Suggestions:
make it fatter - you know, fluffier, down instead of mature feathers, you got the grey part right.
Give it bigger darker eyes (cute!)
Make the beak wider but still as short.

-these suggestons come from my observations of younger birds, but the fatter and bigger eyes part could apply to young felines as well.
...apparenly we can't go with it or something.

Unfortunately, I don't yet know how to make it fluffier - remember that still I not am a real artist. Someone can kindly help me and explain me how to do this in The GIMP?

These shouldn't be too hard to do, especially when picking colours from already existing sprites, or copying the eyes from the L2 Gryphon or the old sprite that I made - when I have time to do it, of course. Thanks again!

I was just wondering, why are his back legs grey like his feathers, and his front legs aren't?

Because also the mainline Gryphon is made this way (mine is derived from it), like you can see here:

Because he has the body of a lion.

Subsequently, both Philip and Alexander would avoid Sparta entirely.

It's a good start, but the animation will look much better if you make the wing movements more anatomically correct. Right now the wing is spread out flat during both up and downward movements. This is not how wings work. Here's a very good sequence of images.

Examining it carefully you will notice two things:
  1. The wing is stretched out flat during downward movement, but bent at both the "elbow" and "wrist" joints during upward movement.
  2. The tip comes forward during the downward movement and goes back during the upward movement.

:hmm: I think E_H only recolored the wings from the mainline griffon, though. I've always thought there was something off about the wing movement, too, but since it's already in mainline...

There's no reason not to strive to better than what's already on the mainline.

Also scaled down, but that's right.

At least for now, completely redrawing the wings from scratch is out of my abilities :( Thanks artisticdude and Sgt. Groovy for your comments! :)
