what if...

instead of having spikes coming off of the shadow, instead you had a smooth border with an alpha gradient (fades to transparent)? The spikyness is making it hard for me to see it and think 'shadow'.

The new nightgaunt (shadow with a mask) is ok, but I like the long curving neck of the other nightgaunt (incredible hulk) - you could probably bulk down the nightgaunt by getting rid of his extra appendages or reducing the length of his long neck.
Hope springs eternal.

Another version (less spikes, some pixels touched)

Top image, just trying some changes (simple transparency, transparency with opaque mask and transparency with borders). Last one have a curious effect, like a dark/shadow aura.

I think you're on to something, the transparency effect in this latest edit adds a lot to the unit.

A much more hardened and much darker version of mine.

Actually fits with the spectre/wraith now.
What do you think? (forget about my attempt at the gaunt right now).

Remember, that this unit is supposed to be very deadly, but insubstantial and very fragile. After all, it has less HP than a level-1 elven archer.

A quick blast of fire will blow this thing away like smoke in the breeze, and that is what my graphic is intended to visually represent.

A demo - note that a lot of the detail in any of the graphics people have made for this is highly dependent on the gamma setting of the user's monitor. Because this guy has white claws and white eyes, they will always show up, regardless of gamma but for either neorice's or my shadow, the other details of the cloth may or may not show.

Gamma has to do with how quickly the contrast changes as you change light data values.

Huh? Is that good or bad for the graphic?

Much, much better. I was originally fan of jetryls version, but now i`m getting second thoughts. I think i`ll support this, jetryl`s version is bit too blurry..

I'd say tigrezno's nightgaunt is good. It has shading but still shadowyness (a very difficult combination to manage, along with being Wesnoth style). However I think it's important for the style of the Shadow and Nightgaunt's graphics to match fairly closely. So what would the Shadow's graphic be? So many have been proposed, I've lost track of all of them.
Play a Silver Mage in the Wesvoid campaign.

The current Shadow graphic! It doesn't exactly differ TOO much, and it looks great.
