Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising

The new grunt line:
lvl 2's right arm seems a bit distorted. I think the problem might be that the arm is too long compared to the left arm. The lvl 3's right glove is a different color from his right, but I'm assuming that's intentional. However, his right glove looks rather flat, which imho is the result of gradient shading. I'd also like to see a bit of the bottom of the torch in his left hand, but that's just a personal opinion. Both lvl 1 and lvl 2's shadows are a bit too angular and straight for me, but I'm guessing that's a WIP?
Orc Cavalry:
I'd like to see a bit more differentiation on the animals between levels, because right now it looks like just their headpiece is changing. There is a size difference between the levels already, but perhaps you could make it more pronounced, or have the lvl 1's horns shorter than those of the later levels, as though the animal weren't yet fully matured.
Orcs with whips:
Awesome. The only things I see is there are a few stray pixels between the lvl 1's legs, and the lvl 3's right hand seems to be holding the whip rather awkwardly.
Stork-ish thing:
Looks great, but I think you might want to consider making the beak a different color, because right now it blends in with the rest of the body, making the entire unit look like it's made of bone or something.
"I'm never wrong. One time I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken."
Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
The bird has very dark outlines. I would suggest brightening them by 10 or 20 V or so, and making a few of them less thick (like the one in-between the body and the wing).
Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
Thanks for the suggestions. I agree that the sheep could be differentiated a bit more. I 'll let those guys cool off for now.
I was testing them against the overpowered primevals and realized some of the primevals really suck. So I'm going to redo some of them, this is a start. The two with black shadows are still the old sprites. Bottom-right is one frame of a standing animation, so the chain is defying gravity.

Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
Cool! I like the one that is kinda like "crouching" the most.
Check out my sprites!
Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
The skin of the units suffers from a lack of defined light direction a bit - the thighs are the most glaring example. If the light is coming from the top right, then the highlights on the skin need to be a bit clearer about that.
Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
Thanks. I'm burned out on sprites, I'll get back to them though.
I'm going to try to get Trinity campaign finished, so this is another portrait for that. It's supposed to be the same person as

Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
These will replace the current Ponce & Bresda portraits in Trinity. They are not done, clearly. I stuck the one from above in as well.

Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
Just confirming; they're supposed to have pink eyes and teeth, right?
Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
I did a picture with Hrala as hostage. It is a frankenstein with the Marshall-2.png. I had to scale it up by 25% to match Hrala. I did not work on the light issue mentioned before. The Lvl2 Leader was not usefull from his pose. I edited Hrala slighly. I put the hands on the back and removed the stick. Maybe this is my first contribution, which makes it on the server? I just played the szenario using it and really liked it.

Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
Thanks, Tet. It is an interesting idea, but I'm not sure frankensteining is a good thing for portraits. However, I'm not fond of empty space or floating sprites in the dialogues either...
I'll have to think about it. If I put it in, I'll update the credits.

Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
When trying to lay out the story for these things, I often look at what I have written and thought "How did I come up with this crap?" Then I waste time replacing it with something just as bad. But if I can pin things down with some artwork, then I can make some sort of progress. So... along those lines, this is the final enemy of Trinity. Creatively called Nem-echidn-esis for now. I'll think of something.
On an unrelated note, some sprites for BMR part 2. Like loyalists, but better in snow. Never mind the names.

Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
I am really impressed by your artistic portraits. I went to all your current pictures and did some recolouring and such things for practice. It really helps to see the detail of the artistic work. I did a lot of hue, contrast and brightness to the pictures and noticed a lot of shifts in your work. For me interesting was that you use a color for human skin which comes at 355 (red with little blue) (recoloring with gimp). I am usually using 20-25 (redish-orange). Your art is really great, and I am sure the colors look the way you want them. For me they look still like at night. But again my taste is mostlikely way of.
I am missing some old pictures. There are many deleted pictures in this thread. Can you supply a link to your complete work?

Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
It's possible. I started with picking colours from a photo, but that was usually straight red, which I didn't think could be right. So I changed it to what I thought made sense, but I could be wrong.Tet wrote:I did a lot of hue, contrast and brightness to the pictures and noticed a lot of shifts in your work. I don't have an on-line collection. My three add-ons (in signature) have many of the images. The ones missing from here and the add-ons are missing because they sucked and have been replaced by something better. If you want a good laugh though, you can find my first attempts in the graphic library:http://wiki.wesnoth.org/Contrib:Doofus-01Tet wrote:I am missing some old pictures. Re: Outsider Art for Bad Moon Rising
Don't be so harsh on your old work. Some artist never update their work and we allways have to play with the historic art. But it is good to keep the old pieces. I do like the old dog. And I do like the recolored shaman. And I do like your backgraund pics.
I am still looking for some unit pics you once had like veteran, courier, etc. Please post.
