Finding my Place
Allow me to start off by saying that the actual game for Battle for Wesnoth is awesome and amazing. The sheer intricacy of the game, as well as the expansionism from the players show a lot of realized potential.
Anyway, down to business. Since joining the community here, I've basically just read up on some of the things Wesnoth has to offer its userbase, provided they have certain skills, such as graphics, music, or prowess with the editor programs. My question is, as a fresh-recruit to the community, where can I start contributing? I understand how the game works, for the most part, (Though my actual skills leave something to be desired.) but since signing up, I've found nothing on the site that functions as an introduction to the metagame of Wesnoth. Where does someone like myself go to learn what needs to be done among the community, what skills are needed, and, in short, how can I help?
I thought posting here would offer a decent point to at least get in touch with a bit of the community. At the very least I could introduce myself.

Well, if you're artistic, do art. If you can compose music or write, that's even better because we need more of those. If you can even do coding, that's even better.

Write? Now, when you say that, are you referring to writing music? Because I'm completely illiterate when it comes to that. If, however, you mean like, fiction writing, that I can do. I'm quite adept at it too. Not to toot my own horn or anything.
Re: Finding my Place
Good! Wesnoth needs more writers. We have abundant artists, enough coders to go around, and just barely enough music to pass, but the writing section is dearly in need of authors. Now go out there and write an epic campaign storyline or something, or help us repair errata of linguistical logistics in the help files or such.

Re: Finding my Place
Great! Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. As a side note, is there any way to get plot summaries for the campaigns, or the timeline in general? (I can't beat the campaigns involving the founding of Wesnoth, or the Scepter of Fire. I managed to beat Under the Burning Suns, but BARELY. There's got to be a better way to learn the plot than failing miserably.)
Re: Finding my Place
We have a Writers Forum you might like to check out then.
Also if you like making things and math you might find your place as a UMC developer. Though you'll find there are no "editor programs" which with to have prowess. What you actually need for that path is a text editor, a list of all the different types of building blocks, and the imagination to put them togethor in various ways. It's a long and rewarding path for one with imagination [and free time].

Good. The single biggest gaping hole in Wesnoth's otherwise excellent quality is writing, specifically as it pertains to character dialog and personality.IntuitionJo wrote:Write? Re: Finding my Place
That happens to be my specialty.
Re: Finding my Place
Ha! I'm glad a writer has joined, and I'm glad I got here before anyone else got you signed up for anything. That is my specialty too, as I am writing a campaign with high detail to storyline and character development (So it'll be unique to the Wesnoth world XD). Another person to help me with character development and personality would be great, and I would highly appreciate your help.
I think this would be a great place for you to start, so I hope you consider my offer.

Re: Finding my Place
Not to shoot you down, but imo Mainline writing would be more useful to the community as a whole.
That being said, we're in a string freeze until the next dev stream: this means that your edits will not appear in the game proper until the next big release (but will be saved until then) if you do decide to go the mainline route.

Don't know if you need someone else right now, but I just thought I'd remind everyone that I, too, am always interested in helping with characters and stories.Hulavuta wrote:Ha! Re: Finding my Place
Well, I think I'll take you up on that Hulavuta, if I had more information. I'd rather contribute to a campaign than make editorial changes, anyway. I'll wait until another mainline is implemented before even TRYING to go for the canonical stuff. Make a name for myself, you know?Hulavuta wrote:Ha! Re: Finding my Place
Well, you can find some bits of story scattered around the first 10 pages of the development topic, and I'm thinking of putting up a topic in writers about the story and characters. Plus, it's "kinda" popular, the first week it got over 400 downloads, more downloads then extended era, which came out a while before.
