It had been announced and come it shall : I'm back on the orcs.

For starters, a quick reviewed assassin with improved lighting. Note that shading's not complete yet : I've only been working on overall lighting so as to improve volumes.

Looks great! Not much else I can say until you shade it fully.

:D Just great to have you back!

The assassin is shaping up awesomely! There is already so much volume in the upper half!
And some sharp highlights on the blades would be a great contrast to all the other muted and dark colours.

I'm not sure if I should comment on this due this being a process shot but I feel his legs shading is slightly off, they seem like like hard tubes not loose cloth hanging around legs, their lights also feel a tad too bright.

noob, & this is a very long thread, so pardon if i'm repeating previous discussions, but 2 things:

1. what about poison on the knives/blades? doesn't have to be lavish, but maybe a little greenish liquid painted along the edges, as appropriate?

2. the way he's holding the 2 throwing knives in his left hand seems slightly awkward; very late to change it now, i know, but what about editing tweaks to adjust their positioning? or simply reducing it to one knife instead of two?

afterthought: does his face look a little too human? i'm not up on orcs enough to know the taxonomy... :eng:

Not unless kitty or LordBob thinks so. That's what "portrait director" means. You (and I) are in the peanut gallery. Keep that in mind when making suggestions.

it's the nose i think? not pug enough; compared to the other orcs, he looks almost cro-magnon

(& not meant to be taken personally by anyone, just an observation from the peanut gallery... lol)

This is good, really good, despite the fact that he is not finished.
But. I think, that as the assassin throwing dagger, he must hold in the hand one dagger, not two. Two daggers will prevent him to throw.

This is an Orc we're talking about, in his idle animation he scratches his head with the said poisoned knives. To him 2 > 1, no matter the situation.

Plus portraits are meant to depict units in non-combat situations, he's just showing off his sweet loot.

Why can't he be a ninja orc and be able to throw both knives and hit multiple enemies? :P

Back again. Unless Kitty or Jet have any further requests, this is me posting the final assassin. I've been struggling with the lad for weeks now, procrastinating other Wesnoth works until he was done : I say it's about bloody time I switch to the remaining orcs. :?

Next : more Grunt portraits

Those eyes are dead perfect I'd say. Well done LB :D.
The only thing that got me boggled was the new yellow lighting on the knives and hands which does not appear on his clothes.

Looks good to me. Awesome, even. :D

Also, I'd definitely move on if something is becoming a roadblock. I actually tend to do that with my spriting a lot; I allow myself to flit around between whatever's striking my fancy at the moment, because it guarantees that I'm always working on something, as opposed to getting burned out on my "current official task", and then not doing anything as a result.

The only thing that I could mention on the last assasin portrait is that the knives that he has on his left hand (right on the picture) doesn't seem to be held by the hand. but that they are placed under it. (impressions or it has something to do with the lightsource?)

Note that the knife on the other hand looks perfectly grabbed, its only the throwing knives that looks off.

I cannot find nothing more that could look wrong in the portrait. I'm always happy to see another of your pieces on the forum and end waiting to see which colors and shadows would you apply on the next :D

Note that I also don't desire to make you continue working on something that you may end hating (fustration is always bad) but still I wanted to point the only part that feel wrong on the image in case you missed it.

May you have a better week. =)

Vendanna: precisely. He's not meant to have a firm grip on the throwing knives, but instead holds them loosely between his thumb and forefinger. So I'll consider that feeling of yours a mark of success.
Still, that grip I picked clearly isn't easy to read with such an angle. I'm taking a note of that for future reference.

Jet: you speak wisely, as ever. I'll be sure to follow your advice : procrastinate as I might, the pleasure of getting one of those portraits submitted definitely holds its ground. :D

In the meantime, another grunt portrait that had been waiting for his finishing touches since forever : grunt #5.
Following earlier advice, I've adjusted the overall lighting and gave him a more orcish face.
I'm calling him done, so he too can get submitted.
